I don't know what I have in my butt anymore

Postby Ducky » 23 Jul 2012, 12:57

Age 16 now, I think I was 14 (mid-October 2010) when I developed something down there. I didn't eat enough veggies like Mom told me to. One day I was really constipated and in pain, and had some blood when I wiped. It felt like two tears, so I was sure I had anal fissures after researching (although I haven't bled since then). I was embarrassed to see a doctor, so it wasn't until half a year later that I saw a gastroenterologist. He examined my butt, but didn't really say anything afterwards, and just told me to follow a diet.
And so I did, but it didn't really help. Then I saw my pediatrician and she examined it too. She says she couldn't find anything, and she suggested internal hemorrhoids (what?!). She prescribed me a numbing cream and told me to buy Prep H. I got them, but I didn't use them... partially because I didn't want to stick my finger up my butt, and I didn't have high hopes of them healing from some creams.
I felt that the two doctors don't really know about butts, so I wanted to see a real butt doctor. I went online to find one that accepts my insurance, but it was very confusing. I called one doctor's office to ask if they accept my insurance, and they said no. I told them that the website says yes, and then they say, "Oh. Yes we do then." I asked how can I make an appointment, and they said I needed to sign up for something, and sent me to another person. When I asked about making an appointment for a proctologist, they didn't know what I was talking about and put me on hold for about 20 min. I hung up and called other offices, but I was just tired of being on hold every few minutes.
I gave up trying to find a doctor. Whatever is in my butt, it's an on-and-off thing (but never bleeding). Sometimes it'll be a little painful, sometimes it's okay. Yesterday and today were painful, and I don't know what to do. I wish it'd all go away. Image

Hi Ducky,
It sounds like you really need to be seen by a specialist to get this problem better diagnosed. The specialist you need to see is called a colorectal surgeon. Don't be scared off by the word "surgeon". It doesn't mean you need surgery. These are just the specialists that deal with anorectal problems. You can either search for one online or you can call your current doctor and ask for the name of one in your area. You can also call your local closest hospital and ask them for the name of a colorectal surgeon.
If you need help, can your mom help you with the calls?
I know it's really hard, and especially so because you are only 16 years old, but please try to put your embarrassment away. Doctors see these problems all the time and that is what they are there for. I too started suffering with these kinds of things when I was about your age, and I know it's hard. That's why I wanted to jump in and try to reassure you that there is nothing for you to feel embarrassed about. I know this doesn't take the feelings away, but hopefully it helps to know you aren't alone. Do you have a family member you can talk to and who can go with you to your appointments?
Please keep us upated and ask any questions you have. Also, what kinds of things are you eating? Have you added vegetables and fruit to your diet? Do you have constipation or does going to the bathroom require you to strain? It's important to make things soft and easy to pass without straining and you may need to experiment with diet changes some more to make sure things don't get worse for you.

Thank you so much for replying back to me, jr2. I will try again to find a colorectal surgeon near my area. However I have asked different pediatricians for one, and they just refer me to the gastro or general surgeon, which doesn't help at all. Especially as I'm a kid, so I feel that my doctor choices are limited.
My mom has helped me with calling, but her English is limited so I mostly do it. However she will take me to a doctor if I can find one.
Also, after having this problem for so long, I'm really not embarrassed anymore! It was just back then when I felt depressed and couldn't get the courage to see a doctor.
My diet is not as strict as it was before. Previously I would drink loads of water (to the point that I thought maybe I was drinking too much) and would avoid too much meats, nuts, junk food. Eventually I got tired of following a diet, and gradually stopped. Now, I mainly eat a couple of prunes and keep up with the water, and sometimes Benefiber. I eat a decent amount of fruits/veggies. When going to the bathroom, it varies; sometimes I strain a little, and sometimes it flows easily. Image
Thank you again :) I will surely keep you updated.

Yes, it is sometimes frustrating even when you're older to deal within a medical system that doesn't always listen to you. Just be really persistent and keep calling until you find someone willing to work with you. If your symptoms are persisting someone needs to be more thorough about taking a look and offering you better solutions than you've been offered so far. Hemorrhoids and fissures often require different approaches in treatment, and fissures aren't always easy to diagnose by exam, even for the specialists.
