Stenosis, a term that confuses me...

Postby alpinestrawberry » 11 Mar 2011, 14:14

So, I tried to look for more information about it...
And I found this:
http://www.koreamed.org/SearchBasic.php?RID=0009JKSC%2F2002.18.1.7&DT=1
The results of a study, where they measured the anal caliber of people with chronic AF's and compared them to those of normal people. So, it seems that that scary word, stenosis, is just another word for tight anal sphincter, since 84% of the people in the study with chronic AF's had it. And LIS got rid of it for most people.
I've definitely been worried that I have it, since I struggle so much sometimes, and my stool diameter is definitely smaller than it used to be before I had problems.
Come on LIS, save my ass... Image

Stenosis usually develops from scarring after anal surgery such as LIS or hemmorhoidectomy and makes it hard to pass stools or you'll pass thin pencil or snake like stools.
Surgical treatments:
In mild cases, gentle and gradual dilation by the regular passage of normal motions may be enough, but quite often surgery is needed, especially in more severe cases, the surgical treatment of anal stenosis depends on the extent of the problem, in most cases all that's needed is for the anal canal to be stretched, often this can be done by the doctor in the hospital clinic, without the need for anaesthetic.
If the stenosis is severe, dilation may performed under anaesthesia, more major surgery is only needed if the anal canal needs reconstructing or (in small children with congenital anal stenosis) it needs repositioning or there are other malformations that require surgery.

Thanks Steve,
I had seen that info before. But I already have those symptoms and have no prior anal surgeries. I have read that fissures alone can cause enough buildup of scar tissue to cause stenosis...and I'm hopeful that LIS can't possibly make that worse, only better.

I was told by one doctor who I corresponded with about what I thought might be wrong with me when this all started - adhesions from prior surgery in - that no, I did not have adhesions, rather that I had anal stenosis. I also have very narrow stool, alpine strawberry, sometimes even flat (with ridges which seems exceptionally weird), but the main thing is to keep it going through you and not worry too much about the diameter, etc. This is the advice I got, though I have yet to see an actual specialist so feel the advice I have been given so far, by doctors without an examination, I have taken with more than a pinch of salt
Have to say that the thought of having anything done by a doctor in that area involving stretching without anesthesia makes me feel faint at the thought.

I think you're right Sav, the main thing is to keep stool going through you. I find I have real trouble if it dries out, it will get sort of stuck and that's when I get new tears. Miralax to the rescue, although I hope to get off the stuff eventually.
Stretching sounds like a nightmare! Isn't that what they did back in the dark ages for anal fissures? So it sounds like the same damn treatment to me, shouldn't they be cutting instead of stretching?

Oh how things change in 17 months! I don't think that me and my anus had been introduced, in March last year...now, I know it well. It gets massage, like the rest of my body (from me, and no one else!), and I treat it like gold. And know so much more about the ins and out, so to speak. No one will advocate for our health except ourselves. Found that out too.
So glad that the search feature is here on the group, and can go back and read what people have written, on just about any subject connected to our arses! Thanks Val for starting this, whenever she comes in again, which hopefully is never as she is healed and living life!! Image though! Where would be be without this place to moan and groan in our own little ways. Image
