Healing a chronic fissure with nitroglycerine(Rectiv)

Postby pgre » 17 May 2012, 09:35

Hi everyone,
I went to the GI specialist yesterday and after taking a look down there she prescribed Rectiv. She said to only use it for 3 weeks and if the fissure didn't heal, the next step would be botox and then LIS.
Isn't 3 weeks too short of time period to see if the medicine works? Also has anyone healed with nitroglycerine?
Thanks so much.

If you look at Davo's posts, he mentions that his doc said that your body becomes accustomed to nitro after a few weeks and it is less likely to work.
3 weeks does seem a little short but maybe there ends up being another couple weeks of it before the actual botox appointment takes place?
Usually a CRS is the doctor to see for fissures. You might want to ask the GI how many botox and lis she has done. And check her out on a site like ratemds.com.
You've had your fissure a while already though, so maybe that is why she is being aggressive with treatment...
There are lots of people who have healed with nitro, but I can't think of specific people off hand. Have you tried nifedipine?
Do you know about the search on the 'portal' page? If you click the 'google' and 'posts' options you can find more than just using the search engine at the top of this page.
Good luck with the nitro!!! :)

3 weeks seems very short. I've used it for 4-5 weeks in the past and the fissure returned. I've read that it takes up to 8 weeks in some cases, so I would definitely recommend a longer course (reference: boardsailor.com/jack/af/references.html)

I came back from the CRS office a few hours ago, he gave me RECTIV NG 0.4 which is crazy expensive, It's costs $449.99 for people who don't have insurance like me.
he told me to me to come back in 2 months.
Whats the difference between RECTIV and normal NG ?

Rectiv 0.04%

Rectiv is fairly new and specifically for anal fissures. It is double the strength of the compounded nitro that most of us have used. It is 0.4%.
If you go to the website for Rectiv, they have a coupon that so you will not have to pay more than $40 for an Rx.
The literature for Rectiv states to use only 3 wks, probably because it is so strong.
