Mine is also internal. You can't see it looking from the outside, but if you part the anal skin back a bit, you can see it (as long as I'm not really nervous and tight down there). The anal canal ranges from 2 to 4 cm in length, from what I've read, and some fissures can even extend past the pectinate/dentate line (the transitional line that separates the anus from the rectum). The rectum (area above the dentate line) does not have pain-sensitive nerve endings like the anus does (only pressure-sensitive nerve endings), according to WebMD.
January 2013 - Diagnosed with fissure. Eventually turned chronic.
History of IBS and anxiety disorder, along with fear of using bathrooms other than my own caused it.
Tried Diltiazem, but eventually developed a rash.
LIS surgery scheduled August 26th.
