Help for Levator Ani

Postby RichLen4 » 18 Jul 2013, 12:35

Hi All. I've been a long time user of this forum. Started with a two year awful problem with Hemorroids. Got THD Hemerroidectomy which went great. Was left with a fissure but took Niphedipine and that went away. Was still left with pain at the anus opening. At night and/or after sex I get horrible butt-rectal spasms that make that pain MUCH worse. Have seen 3 docs and best answer is since they don't see any anatomical issues the symptoms point to Levator Ani. Makes sense as it is tight there. The CRS gave me Diazitem (sic) cream, anusol suppositories for when it's bad and I've been supplementing all that with magnesium cream (muscle relaxer) and 99% aloe vera gel (very soothing). The diazitem, magnesium and aloe work great together. usually in about 4-6 weeks things really quiet down but the minute I go off I'm back to square one--no permanent healing takes place. Every day I itch and burn for several hours-usually in the middle of my work day. I want to get off all drugs and feel normal. The CRS says there's no cure for Levator Ani. I want this pain to stop--I'm an avid cyclist, active Dad and work all day. The pain is at it's worst 3-7 hours after a morning BM then gets better towards the evening--but sometimes the spasms happen at night. I do the usual baths, etc for relief but I don't want just relief.
Has anyone had success with levator ani and if so please tell me about it. Please help and Thank you in advance.

Hi RichLen4
This should get you started, although I do not have any personal exp.

As you'll notice that link from this board talks about pelvic floor issues as it sound as if your muscles there are in spasm.

Thanks Buttastic. Great post--I just ordered one of the books. Having had a fissure before this feels just like one--difference is it doesn't go away with treatment. Same AS spasms but along with it are these awful Charlie horses that make the AS spasm worse. Like with an AF, patience wears thin!

Hay Rich , check one of my post's/topics regarding Levator Ani: Proctalgia fugax or levator syndrome.
MY sister thought if I was chronic then maybe I had this, Even though my gastro thinks I'm heeled, I'm sore today  with tightness, could be my IBS caused it, don't know, now the pain is a 1 to a 2 but manageable, yet very sore. Oh well I got to deal with it.Image
No happy dance now, was earlier..oh well.

It sure seems so Please go away!
It seems to be another one of those location things and since your lower back is located close to that Levator Ani muscle, the pain may be radiating making it feel like back problems.
Of course this is often misdiagnosed as RichLen4 post suggest and if you think you may have it maybe a 2nd or 3rd opinion from a specialist would verify it. Bring it up on your next check up, who knows.
This is discuussed a bit here, check it out....
