Hello from the Great White North

Postby Johnny Canuck » 21 Aug 2013, 14:07

Hello fellow fissure-ites (or whatever we're supposed to call ourselves!),
My quick and dirty story (which isn't nearly as bad as some of you poor souls on here!) is as follows:
Approximately a year ago at my annual physical I admitted to the doctor that I'd had some itching and pain in my anus, especially after BM's, and while I was working hard at keeping it clean back there, it just wouldn't stop being aggravated. He took a peek and gave me the news that I'd been suffering from an anal fissure. He didn't make a big deal about it, just counselled me to not strain, drink plenty of water, eat fibre, don't linger on the throne (no more reading while on there) and prescribed Proctosedyl ointment for me.
After a few days of using Tuck's medicated wipes and applying the ointment, I was noticably better, but had to keep using the ointment to keep comfortable. This was fine until I ran out of the ointment and being a typical guy didn't go back to see the doctor.
I wound up resorting to over the counter Anusol and using baby wipes or Tuck's when I could. I managed but was uncomfortable consistently. Well, annual checkup time was near and the pain and itching had gotten bad again. I told the doc, he prescribed a bigger tube of Proctosedyl (with 5 refills this time!) and I was ecstatic! But, this time when I started using the Procotosedyl I immediately felt a burning sensation back there - I figured it was just sensitive around the fissure and kept slapping on the ointment. After 3 days of use and increased burning and itching I read up on Procotsedyl and saw that burning can be a side effect of the ointment. I couldn't sleep last night from the pain and had to finally reveal to my poor wife why I'd been tossing and turning and heading into the bathroom multiple times (sorry honey, you'll never look at me the same way!). So, I don't want to use the ointment anymore and need an alternative therapy.  Unfortunately my doctor is away for 2 weeks vacation and his office informed me that he'd be in touch when he returned. In the meantime I'm taking metamucil fibre, stool softeners and drinking water. I was so excited thinking some prescription ointment would be my salvation but now realize that I'm likely in this for a long fight! I'll try warm baths tonight and antiseptic ointment - does anyone know of another prescription medication that can help with fissures?
Sorry to go on for so long, but after a year plus of suffering in silence it is good to hear that there are others out there!

Hi Johnny!
I know exactly what you feel (doh).
You can ask your doctor about Nitro ointment.
It helped many people but headache is common side-effect.

Yes, stop the ointment immediately if you haven't already. I had a reaction to diltiazem - itchy, oozing skin, not nice. As soon as I stopped, it cleared up. Proctosedyl is just a painkiller and steroid hormone, and I don't think steroids are recommended for long-term use. Also I think painkillers have their place, but you have to treat what is causing the pain, not just mask the pain. I would see a specialist colorectal surgeon if you can. You can get a long way with diet and drinking lots of water (stay hydrated - important), plus stool softeners etc, but at some point you'll want to know how the healing is progressing, and a colorectal specialist will be able to tell you a lot more about your bum than a regular GP.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Hi Johnny & Welcome.
Sorry to hear of your pain, but everyone here can help you as we all understand what these nasty Fissures do to you.
I was prescribed Rectogesic, which does state the side effects possible, and I must say, the first time I used it, I had an instant head ache, felt dizzy and basicly awful. Which then made me not use it for over a week as after experiencing that, and then reading all the possible side effects, I thought I didnt want to go through that.
But then I read everything I could find out about Fissures and treatments, and read that if you half the dose, and gradually over a week or more as your body gets used to it, increase the amount to the right amount, it works just fine.
I think the shock of using the full amount is just too much for some peoples bodies. Once you are used to it, it really is a great help. And I managed to heal mine to the stage where mine is now Scar Tissue, through using the cream, Vaseline before every BM and during the day when needed, sitz baths three times a day, loads of water intake, complete healthy soft food, and some good vitamins.
Not everything works for everyone, it really is a case of trial and error to discover what works for you. But well done on sharing with your wife about the Fissure, at least now you can have support at home which helps so much.
Check out other people's blogs on here, you can gain so much from other peoples experiances, and it helps so much just to know, your not alone.
Keep us posted with your progress and any help or advice you need, just ask. There is bound to be more than a few people on here that can help and advise you.
Wishing you comfort soon Image  X

Hi Johnny Canuck, Welcome aboard, now I'm from Toronto. Ontario, Check out my post re this product, contains no cortisone, wont thin the skin...I use it in between my script of Nitro/Xylicaine.
posted in this topic under References, Websites, Facts...
where you can buy HemoClin, check it out.
Contains no cortison, for hems and Fissures

I don't get headaches with the nitro, but some people do, so try it but for the time being use the Hemoclin, safe and can be used with other script's, plus I apply it before a BM, instead of Vaseline now.
Take care you will get some amazing advise here, so take it all in and read everyone's post's...Image
