New guy to forum fissure/fistula sufferer

Postby Asstronaut » 25 Sep 2013, 12:11

Hello all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself as a fellow fissure and fistula suffer.

I got my fissure back in December 2011 (right before a holiday - long haul!) and battled it until around December 2012. I got LIS in July 2012 so I guess that took 6 months to heal me. However around this time I also developed a superficial fistula which I am currently dealing with as we speak, despite having it laid open in May of this year. I have no idea if the two are related!

Like many of you out there I've been through numerous CRS's, hospitals, times of hope and times of despair, pain, work/personal life devastation, rebuild then more devastation, all because of a tiny persistent lesion in my posterior!

Anyway, just a shout out to you all and an offering of an ear/source of information/general comparing of notes for anyone going through the same.

Cheers : )

Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.

Hi Scientist2516,

Thanks for your kind words. Yes you are right, some of the names on here have me in stitches sometimes!

It's good that so many people can still laugh during tough times!

hI varunnagpal86,

Just read your blog. Your situation is quite similar to mine in that fissure and fistula were often confused. It was great when they finally diagnosed me properly, as I also felt the jigsaw was coming together and the right treatment could begin!

Hope you are healing well.

How are you now? I had mine laid open and it failed. Now I have Seton and worried about the type of surgery that comes after. What are your pain levels at?

Hi Carmona81,

I am sorry to hear that your lay open failed. Keep positive, hang onto the fact that all fistulas resolve one day one way or another! Try not to worry about future procedures, I know it's horrible thinking of the pain and recovery but each time I've had something done I've been one step closer to full healing.

Currently my pain levels stop me from sitting for very long at all, and basically feel like I've got an open wound in my anal canal which is very sore and sensitive. It's strange, I've had a fissure before and it's not that kind of pain. It's still extremely sore though. I think the wound is larger than a fissure but is not as sensitive due to hyper granulation tissue covering the area. Walking is also difficult on bad days.

How is your pain? And what is your approach to pain management? : )

Not too much pain. Extra strength Tylenol while at work. Tramadol and and a dulcolax before bed. Only eat once a day with snacks during the day. Seems that when I eat I have an urge for the restroom so I'd rather wait till I get home.

It try to stay positive but it's the unknown that worries me. Not knowing if my next bm will be painful. Or if the next visit to the crs will show progress.

Hi Carmona,

I know that feeling only too well. Living in fear of trips to the bathroom is no way to carry on. I've just come back from my CRS and been told I need a further LIS to heal mine.

Sounds encouraging that your pain levels are low. With mine, some days I would have to just leave work it was that bad. Is it pain from your internal opening which is the worst?
