Hello, I was diagnosed with a posterior anal fissure on 7/1/2011. I was prescribed to use the diatezem cream with lidocaine, and Levsin tablets 4x a day (to help quiet my bowel). So I have been using that for 6 weeks now, twice a day. I saw a surgeon 10 days ago, and they added 10,000 IU of vitamin A to the mix.
I have been a vegan for quite sometime and my daily morning usually consisted of 3 to 5 bowels, fairly soft, never hard or constipated (I think my condition is from too much of a good thing, and the Levsin has got me down to 1 to 2). My normal diet is mainly all fiber and I also added Konsyl now so my fiber intake is 30 or more grams daily. For 5 weeks I had intense spasm, burning, stinging, throbbing ans sometimes intense itching, but very little pain at the time of evacuation. Over the last several days, the intense pain is gone (I have up and down days and moments though), I am just uncomfortable, from the feeling that I am not normal. Am I on the road to recovery, without LIS???

Hey there, welcome to the forum.
I think one of the hardest things about getting a fissure besides the pain is that it effects your whole life and makes us feel like we're not normal anymore.
It's a hard blow when your strolling along in life with no problems and then all of the sudden everything has to change for a paper cut on your b-hole
It's hard to say if you could actually be on the road to recovery but not impossible. I think one of the biggest mistakes I made with my fissure was giving it more time than I should have to heal. I waited 8 months with false hope. It looks like you aren't anywhere close to the amount of time I gave... It seems we all have to come to the breaking point or realization that our fissures aren't healing in our own due time. You may be one of the few who heal and since your fissure's not too chronic and you have the diltiazem - you still have a good shot still.
Don't be afraid if it does come to LIS. I thank God every day that I got it and could kick myself for not doing it sooner.

Welcome! And I'm sorry you have to be here! Like, Dawn, I'm also not sure if it's possible to say that you are on the road to recovery just yet, but it does sound like you have a pretty good shot at it, since you started the proper treatment before a lot of time passed. Be very diligent with the ointment, warm baths and soft stools and you may be one of the luck ones! If not, don't despair. As Dawn says, the surgery is not that horrible - at least it doesn't usually hurt as much as the fissure in most cases, and it has a very good cure rate.

hello all and thanks for the replies! It has been 4 days since I had any pain!!! thank GOD!!! what I am most interested now is determing what I need to do to prevent this in the future. I am definantly not 100%, but I feel like I am recovering. I need to put my trust in someone that knows what lifestyle changes will help me going forward.

Hey elecrep - I'm so glad that you are getting better! I'm making an appointment with a nutritionist to talk about dietary changes I can make to eat better and have better BMs. I'm already eating much healthier, but I want to learn more about fiber and so on. There are specialists that you can see to talk about that kind of stuff. I'm pretty sure that a nutritionist would be a trustworthy person to help you with that.

Hi Ele,
I thought you'd had your fissure since january 7th - we write our dates round the other way to you, it took me a while to see why everyone thought you'd only been suffering a little while - DUH!!
Hopefully you can heal without surgery. 4 days pain-free is a VERY good sign! Be aware though, that the damn thing tends to creep back again when you think you've beaten it!!

Positive Update

Postby elecrep » 26 Aug 2011, 10:26

Hello All, it has now been 12 days without spasms!! I am still using the diatezem cream with lidocaine 2x a day, and Levsin tablets have cut to 2x a day (to help quiet my bowel). Even though I had been a vegan, I have been keeping track of my fiber intake and count at least 30 to 40 grams daily. I am still not 'normal', as I can 'feel' the fissure (mostly if I walk down stairs), and now it doesnt even hurt when I sneeze or cough, I can drive my car and feel quite comforatble as well! Any insight as to where I am going, and how long it might take to heal 100%??
