so i went to the gi specialist today

Postby dee » 05 Mar 2010, 13:39

i got a prescription for an antibiotic (not sure why)
she told me to get lanacane to anesthetize my butt and miralax to soften the stools
i got a prescription for nitro (i've had it before and it gave me headaches Image
and monday i go for a colonoscopy
she also told me to take a narcotic 4 times a day until the colonoscopy--i've never taken that much before--wonder if i'll be in la la land the next few days...
tomorrow i have to start the all-liquid diet so today i went and had a donut!
the week after that i get to have a pap smear--every private part of my body is being poked and prodded in the next couple of weeks--hope something good comes of it Image
thanks for being supportive

Hey dee, don't worry about the nitro, the headaches get easier to cope with over time, also, you could try administering a lesser amount, that also works, as for the colonoscopy I think that's routine procedure which rules out other conditions such as crohns, ulcerative colitis and IBD amongst other things, although I haven't had one (yet) but lots of other boardies have gone through it and i'm sure they'll reassure you.
Wishing you the best of luck Image

Wow that's quite a regime you've got there Dee Image It seems like a lot to do in one shot (kind of like a blanket or "carpet bomb" approach) but it should at least get you some temporary relief and maybe some answers.
What kind of narcotic is it? I've taken Percocet (oxycodone) before when my fissure was real bad and it did break the cycle of painful spasms for a while. Just be sure you take Miralax and drink tons of water so you don't get constipated.
I had a colonoscopy a while ago to rule out other serious conditions like inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer, diverticulitis, etc. It's not a fun procedure but can give some peace of mind. Don't plan on doing anything during the preparation day, though, because you'll probably be on the toilet for hours Image
And yeah the nitro headaches usually go away in a few days. I had really bad throbbing ones when I first started it but that side effect subsided pretty quickly.
Good luck with everything! It's a lot to do over the next few days but beats waiting around for weeks and months if you ask me :)

I didn't find the nitro headaches too bad after a few days of using it. I suffered more from feeling lightheaded after applying it. I used the nitro in the morning before leaving home for work and i often felt dizzy on the commute in. Once or twice I forgot myself and ran for the train, felt really ill after that! In the end I just gave myself more time.
As for the colonoscopy, I had one last summer to rule out colon cancer. It was fine, I was sedated through the procedure. As NG says, expect to be on the loo for the preparation day! I felt OK afterwards though, better than I thought I would.
All the best to you.

the doctor said i had a fissure (duh!)
seemed a bit of a waste of a weekend and money...and when i "woke up" they wouldn't let me have any pain meds for the fissure that was rearing its ugly head...
i'm going to my regular doc next week for something else and i'm going to request a prescription for canasa...i know it's supposed to be for ulcerative colitis but this nitro stuff isn't cutting it...i'm also thinking of stopping the antidepressants if they're making me constipated :(
the gi doc who did the colonoscopy told me to take 4 narcotics a day leading up to the colonoscopy...probably just made me even more backed up...from now on i'll just go to my regular doc (actually not a doc--a nurse practitioner) and if she's not there i won't go--i'll make due until she's back in the office!
thanks for asking--i wish i could say my fissure was on the way to being healed, but i'm not sure it is...

I've been taking Lexapro for over a year (A/D), and it is not constipating.
