Probably a silly question

Postby Sal7864 » 22 Apr 2018, 20:08

Silly question I had anal fissure partial lateral sphincterotomy surgery February 10th 2017 is it possible that a surgery like that would cause someone to have IBS afterwards or some kind of gastrointestinal issues?

What happens is after I eliminate most times when it's kind of soft I feel I cannot get it all out that's causing to have to continually wife or use a sitz bath too clean my rectum out. I just can't seem to push it all up when it's soft

Sorry if the questions seem stupid but just wondering if anybody else has experienced this..
I did not have this issue before I head surgery

I doubt the surgery itself could cause IBS, but possibly the stress or dietary changes could be a factor. Have you tried putting your feet on a stool in the bathroom? It may help with more complete elimination.

I have always had trouble with soft stool, because it comes out like a continuous toothpaste squeeze, rather than in chunks like a fully-formed stool would do. Your body easily pushes out the solid pieces, but when it's a continuous stream, the push mechanism doesn't last long enough to expel it all at once. I would try to find a combination of foods that enable you to have a BM that isn't too soft (or too hard!). This is always a difficult balance to find, but with time and effort can usually be accomplished.

I have but it does not seem to help much I don't go mushy all the time sometimes is like rabbit poops I think IBS is an issue , seems to be more or less constipation during the week and then I unload on the weekends , usually on a Saturday when the work week is done

Do you take psyllium husk? It helps both constipation and loose stools. It has been a lifesaver for me.

Hi sal7864, this is going to be tmi, but I manually help my BMs come out by gently pressing my buttocks together. It really helps! Also I second the Squatty Potty suggestion, which also helps complete evacuation.

How have you been since your LIS and procedure to get the wound to heal? I think I am in the same position as you. It has been 2 months since my LIS and the incision site still feels pretty sore. I’m due to see my CRS next week to find a solution.

I had to have a second clean out procedure done at the end of last August the colorectal surgeon said it was completely healed., but if that is the case then how come I'm still experiencing these issues? It's funny because there's really no pain when I go it's just that I feel like I can't completely empty sometimes when it's not hard and I have to use a sitz bath to get it all out .... and even after soaking three or four times few hours later I feel like I have to wipe again.. so I don't know if it's due to the surgery maybe a hemorrhoid or maybe a case of IBS I have read work that is a symptom of IBS... whatever it is it's very frustrating just can't feel clean down there unless I sitz after every movement..... another thing is I always feel like I can feel my anus it sounds weird I know and you really shouldn't feel it until you're wiping it or you're going but just feels like something's there all the time... it doesn't seem to matter what I eat.... so frustrating

So I went to see The Specialist again and the result was that my spincter isn't tight enough and this is why that I have a difficult time cleaning up after a softer bowel movement she suggested that I take Metamucil which I am to try to firm up bowel movements and to maybe do kegel exercises other than that but not much more they can do. It may eventually gain full strength not sure but it's been almost 16 months since the surgery. At least it wasn't anything above that as far as cancer or anything like that so I guess that's good news but it's kind of disheartening that it's taking this long to regain the strength of what I've heard once you cut muscle it may never be 100%

How are you getting on with the Metamucil? Is it helping at all? I'm glad that your problem isn't serious in the medical sense, but I can understand your frustration. Have you tried using a sanitary pad or panty liner after BMs? That way you could replace them every couple of hours and it will help you to feel fresh. It doesn't help with tightening the sphincter, but it might help you feel better while you work on your kegels.
