Anal Fissure surgery almost 2 years ago...pain is back????

Postby lynnly » 28 Aug 2011, 14:55

I wish that I would have found this site a long time ago. I started feeling constipated in March 2009. The pain began some weeks later. I went to a nurse practitioner who did not give me a physical exam but only listened to my symptoms and said I had hemmorhoids. The pain began to worsen and meds would not work. The pain became so severe I could not function. I finally was given a referral to a specialist who gave me a physical exam and told me I had been suffering with an anal fissure. He prescribed some meds that I injected after every bowel movement. It did give me relief. However, he suggested that I have a flex scope to see how bad the fissure was. I had the scope October 2009. He said it was quite severe and required surgery. I was scared to death of surgery especially the side affects. The pain was tolerable with the lidocaine/hydrocortisone acetate but still hurt. I had the surgery in December 2009. The pain did not subside immediately like I was hoping. It took several weeks before the fissure healed and the pain stopped. I had my life back again. I could never describe to anyone how bad the pain was all those months. Anyway, every now and again I would have some pain after a bm. Well, yesterday I had a bm and it hurt a little. Today after a bm, the familiar pain is back. It has been 6 hours since I went to the bathroom and the pain although not near as severe, is there. I am beside myself. I do not want to go through the pain or another surgery. Has anyone on this forum had to have surgery a second time?

Hi there, and welcome!
Well, there have been some people who have had to have another surgery, but the fact that you have gone 2 years with no problems is good!
My suggestion would be to get to your gp quickly and ask for one of the healing creams like diltiazem or rectogesic, and in the meantime use a stool softener like miralax/movicol. Don't panic just yet!

Hi lynnly - I'm so sorry you are suffering! I agree with Val. Definitley get to your doc and get some nitro or diltiazem and use stool softeners and take warm baths. You may very well beat this dragon soon! Since you've had an LIS, my guess is that you can probably heal with the ointments, stool softeners and baths.
It is not common, but also not unheard of, for people to need a second LIS (there have been a few older boardies here who had to have that). So if it comes to that, you shouldn't worry too much. If you have a good CRS, s/he can tell you if that's a good option for you. But in the meantime, I second what Val said - I don't think you need to panic yet. But defintely feel free to come here to vent - we all know what it's like to live in fear of the dreaded butt pain! Image
