Ice on fissure...

Postby Stratocaster » 01 Nov 2012, 09:39

I'm wondering if applying ice to a fissure is helpful or not. I've been doing it the last few days and it seems to be helping.... I go through these stupid cycles where it gets much better and then one bad washroom break makes it annoyed again. Well normally after a bad trip it takes 3-5 days before it's not painful to touch. I find using ice 3x a day seems to make it not painful within 10-12 hours. I'm also thinking it might not be good as it causes blood to leave the area... advice?

Hi Stratocaster
If ice helps your pain, go for it. Be careful not to ice too long to prevent tissue damage. While the application of ice will temporarily interrupt blood circulation to the area, when the ice is removed from an area it results in hyperemia (increase in blood flow) to tissues. Ice also can help with inflammation of the fissure. There are devices out there that cool to a specific temperature to avoid tissue damage and are made for the anal area. Anuice is one product.
Wishing you the best.

If you do use ice one thing that I have used that really works is: latex gloves filled with water tied at the top and the hung with a paper clip in the freezer. Once frozen use KY or Vaseline on each frozen finger. It stings a little at 1st but within a minute I kinda numb up and it seems to take swelling down.

I'd think that'd cause some tissue damage...
What I've been doing is folding a kleenex over 4 times and applying it topically. letting it cool the area but no crazy stinging. i think its working beautifully so far.
