Cereal - So confused :-(

Postby sugarspice » 18 Nov 2013, 16:01

Suffice to say I'm starving at the moment, living off fruit for breakfast and vegetable soup for lunch, still it won't last long once I finally find a carb that agrees with me!

Anyway what would help me greatly is a good cereal! Sorry to have to post again and I have been looking at other breakfast posts but as I can't eat bran based cereals (too much insoluble fibre) and oats make me constipated I'm a bit stuffed...or not as the case may be!

I am wondering whether to go down the 'corn' route? I.e - corn flakes or some type of corn based cereal?

I have been a bit freaked out by the 'Popcorn is terrible for fissures' posts, so wondering if my corn quest is a bad idea?

Many thanks everyone x

"The following cereals have a low content of fiber:

Cream of Wheat and Malt-O-Meal: 1 g per cup. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes,
Product 19, Apple Jacks, Cocoa Crispies, and Smacks: 1 g per cup. Farina Hot Wheat
Cereal: less than 1 g per cup. Kellogg’s Special K: 0.7 g per cup. General Mills Cocoa
Puffs, Corn Chex, Golden Grahams, Kix,

Total Corn Flakes, and Trix: between 0.6 g and 0.9 g per cup. General Mills Rice Chex
and Honey Nut Chex: 0.3 g per cup. Kellogg’s Crispix and Rice Krispies: 0.1 g per cup.
General Mills Reese’s Puffs and Kaboom: 0 g."

Or sugarpice, you could try taking in stool softeners with the higher fiber cereal.
Ask away, that's what were here for.

Thanks so much for your help Buttastic! Do you think a cereal low in fibre would be ok or as bad as one too high in fibre? This is where I get confused! Many thanks

Yeah, you need your fiber sugarpice:

I was trying to tell you that, that you can take in
these higher fiber cereal safely with stool softeners.
This is what many if not what most people will do here.

Along with other health issues Yes, you can get constipated from
to little fiber.

So sugarpice, its all about knowing your body and what foods
whether high in insoluble fiber or not will tend to plug you
more. If I were you I would keep a food diary and experiment
a little more on these higher fiber cereals.

But in fighting your fissures now, I also would probably go the
stool softener route with the regular cereal. Prune juice and flaxseed
are great at combating high insoluble foods if you don't want to
bother with OTC Movicol or the like.

So back to your your original question, yes I think consuming low fiber
cereals especially in the long run is worst than consuming high fiber
cereals. Please also discuss these things with your DR.

Hey Sugar,
Why beat yourself up about cereal?
What about some nice wholegrain toast or bio-yogurt with chopped fruit and sprinkled with flaxseed??
Sometimes, I'll make a bowl of chopped fruits (or tinned in natural juices) and add yogurt & sprinkle a small amount of bran flakes or oats or cheerios on top (rather than making it the major part of breakfast)
My treat is always a full fry-up of baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, a fried egg in olive oil! with brown toast & marmite...YUM. :)

That sounds great ETO, I think I will go down the fruit road for now, I have flaxseed :-) Too scared to go down the carb root for a while. I was looking for something quick so will go for the fruit idea :-)

Thought about rice crispies (uk) not sure what they are anywhere else in the world??
A nice thick Greek yoghurt with honey or fruit.... Stewed fruit... Tinned fruit... Fresh fruit?
A couple of digestive biscuits... Maybe with a bit of jam on??

Hope you find something that agrees with you soon
