I myself just got a referral to a gastroenterologist (no crs docs in Toronto it seems). Joke is that the appt is not for 6 months...

Most importantly...how are you doing, feeling?

Don't like to hijack someone else's thread, but needed to address this.

There are a LOT of colorectal surgeons in Toronto, so if you'd rather see one of those (rather than a gastroenterologist), here's a list from the Canadian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Just scroll down to Ontario, and you'll see quite a few in Toronto and the GTA.

I hear you, I hear you loud and clear. My next plan is a holistic approach, will keep you posted.

Why are doctors only focused on severe disease? That's my feeling from all of them, if you aren't at risk of losing your life.....please leave.

So sorry to hear it Hurtinend. That is disgustingly unprofessional. I wouldn't go back to that Doctor if I were you. There must be another one to try. Don't give up on it. Not to say you wouldn't be able to heal yourself. The more time goes by with my issues I realize that the only one who can and has been able to heal me (at least this far) is myself.

I know what you mean about Doctor's attitudes. They are not all like that but the vast majority is. It is so difficult to find any that want to treat chronic pain. Most just want to do the straight forward big fixes like saving lives. The real noble stuff. What about quality of life?

Are you still doing the bleach baths? Do you think the infection is better (assuming it was infected)?

I won't go back to that doctor, not sure where to go from here, would need yet another referral to see someone else. They say Canada has some of the best health care in the world....okay I have no perspective other than personal experience.

Bleach baths...didn't hurt me, haven't done it since last week, not sure if it helped, I did read that it should not be done more than 2 times a week. Do I have an infection? Who knows, ask.....the doctor?????? I have everything from strangeness, fissures, roids.....but yesterday I'm apparently all good, use cortisone...thanks doc.

chachacha...there are plenty of colorectal surgeons in Vancouver as well....yet I cannot get that special referral to see them, no idea why, turns out this last guy I saw is a general surgeon, not a crs, very frustrated indeed

Think I will lay in front of emergency tonight

I wonder if you could call them and ask if they're seeing new patients, and then ask your family doctor for a referral?

Adding that family doctors usually have a list of specialists who they have a "relationship" with, and just stick to one opthalmologist, one CRS, one rheumatologist, etc. If you brought a new one to their attention (we did this for my mother once) they may be more than happy to request an appointment for you.

Back in 2001 I needed an emergency hemmorrhiodectomy and I got on the phone and called surgeon after surgeon asking if they were taking new patients and how long the wait was. I found one who could get me in ASAP and I got my GP to refer me. I ended up with a general surgeon who I think was very skilled. His bedside manner was unpredictable though. I do suspect that a CRS would be a longer wait. This guy later banded my hemmies a few times as well. Anyway, I think he is still practicing....but again, he is a general surgeon and I don't know if he does LIS. Was quite good with hemmies though.

I don't know whether we have the best healthcare...I have met a number of awful Doctors, a number that were useless and a few that were really good. I do tend to think that our system maintains more that are in it because they actually care since there is not as much money involved as in private healthcare systems. At least I think they tend to be more honest. One big negative though is that they are rather overworked and underpaid (compared to their counterparts in the U.S. for example).

I wonder if "designations" are different in Canada. When I first saw my CRS about 23 years ago, for the treatment of hemorrhoids, I was told that he was a general surgeon, but when looking at his hospital bio, it says that his "clinical focus" is colorectal surgery, and he is on the list (and a member of) the Colorectal Surgeons of Canada. I also know that he spends about 90% of his time on colorectal issues, teaches about them at U of T, and writes papers about them, but he also clearly was trained as a general surgeon and can obviously do surgery on other parts of the body too, if need be.

msimon, is your original surgeon listed on the page I referenced above?
