Sports with Fissure

Postby LCFBiscuit » 23 Jun 2015, 10:29

I have had an anal fissure since mid-May (now, 5 weeks); however, since I had problems with hemorrhoids in the past I thought that was the problem. I finally got to see a CRS about a week and half ago and she saw the fissure right away. I also have hemorrhoids, but they're not causing the problem. The problem was started presumably because I have, on average, 4 BMs a day, mostly diarrhea-type ones. She prescribed sitz baths, Calmol-4 suppositories and c-Nifedipine gel. I was a little bit better until 3 days after seeing the Doc, when I had 6 BMs that day and I was in EXTREME pain (I'm sure you all know since you are in the same boat). A week after seeing the Doc I called to see what options I had (since they had scheduled a follow-up for 4 weeks after initial appt). I was told it takes about a week for the medicines/etc to alleviate the pain and start working. So, I was fine until 2 BMs last night when I was in the worst pain in my life and didn't sleep and couldn't wait until 8am to call the Doc office and ask them to see me ASAP.

Anyway, my main question here (and why the topic) is that I play ice hockey (goalie) about 2-3x/week. That hour and half or whatever is actually one of the few times where I have no pain (as is walking). My husband thinks the ice hockey is actually making it worse, but I think it's the BMs (I usually have a pre-game BM because of nervousness and in that post-BM pain until I start playing). Last night after the game I could barely get to the bathroom fast enough at the rink to have a loose BM and that's when the excruitiating pain began last night. Any advice or insight into if I should completely stop playing, even though I believe it's more the BMs than the actually playing hockey? I don't have another game for 6 days and hoping to get some healing done in that time, but not sure if it will get worse again when I do play in 6 days? Please help!

Thank you.

As your fissure is still in the acute stage, you could still heal it with the Nifedipine. Can't give you advice about doing sport - you have to listen to your own body and ask your CRS what she thinks. AFs are one of the nastiest and most painful things you can get (in my eyes) and anything you can do to get it better quickly is what I would go for.
