I have also been low thyroid. In my teens I was tested as my mom and sister were both low. At that time I came back normal. After I had my son in 2006 I have been up and down, on and off meds. It's crazy. After my daughter was born in 2009 I experience postpartum thyroiditis, my thyroid went crazy high, my hair was falling out, I couldn't sleep and was having panic attacks which is not like me. After about 2 months of that, I crashed and went hypo again. I've been on synthroid ever since, playing with the dose to try to find the best one for me. I highly recommend the book Thyroid Power. Its really good. It talks about the different thyroid tests and what they all mean as well as the different meds and combinations. My last tsh was 3.7 and I was feeling pretty good. The book says that since the normal tsh range is so great, just because you fall within "normal" doesn't mean that you're at the best level for your body. I increased my dose a bit and feel even better. It really is a fine balance. I dont recommend playing with your dose without talking to your doctor, but if you have a doc who will think outside the box, it really helps. You'll know if the meds don't seem to have you bak to your normal self even if your tsh is normal. Hope you get things all sorted out!
