On December 11, 2008 the FDA issued an alert regarding acute phosphate nephropathy associated with the use of oral sodium phosphate products for bowel cleansing, including Visicol®, OsmoPrep® and over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate products available without a prescription. As a result of this information, the FDA has issued a black box warning for both OsmoPrep® and Visicol® to communicate the risk of acute phosphate nephropathy.1
