New FDA warning on phoso-preps for colonoscopies

Postby Guest » 24 Jan 2009, 08:57

This just out in December 2008. Includes OTC oral sodium phosphate products.
On December 11, 2008 the FDA issued an alert regarding acute phosphate nephropathy associated with the use of oral sodium phosphate products for bowel cleansing, including Visicol®, OsmoPrep® and over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate products available without a prescription. As a result of this information, the FDA has issued a black box warning for both OsmoPrep® and Visicol® to communicate the risk of acute phosphate nephropathy.1
The full text of the actual warning issued by the FDA is available by going to the FDA website:http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/OSP_solution/default.htm. In addition, C.B. Fleet Company announced a voluntary recall of their over-the-counter products Fleet® Phospho-soda®and Fleet® EZ-Prep® Bowel Cleansing System.2

No, I don't think so. Visicol is different. I had a Rx for it but never filled it since I canceled my colonoscopy.

I think the OsmoPrep people were displaying their wares at the last Crohn's conference. If I am not mistaken, it is of the pill variety (not the horrible tasting liquid). I'll have to check because I still have info in the other room about one of the colonoscopy preps.

I was right guys/gals. I brought home info about OsmoPrep from the CCFA conference. I thought it sounded like a great alternative to the horrible tasting liquid prep. And I remembered correctly that OsmoPrep is tabs. (Thank you little brain. Image ) I'll ask them at Mayos what they use for prep.
