What is the benefit of xylocaine cream for anal fissures if applied to the external area around the anus?

I suspect that it will numb the muscle and we won't be able to know pain and hence can't exercise any caution during defecation?

Does it helps in healing? Or it it to only numb the pain?

It's only for pain relief as told to me by my CRS. She was talking about lidocaine but it's a similar substance.
