3 Weeks Post-op

Postby BrokenBuckeye » 20 Dec 2011, 11:47

Three weeks and doing well. No major issues and slowly returning to normal activity.
While my new rear is working nicely, I am staying vigilant with diet and softeners. For the most part, BMs are pain free and sitz baths are no longer a required part of my morning ritual; however, just to be safe, if time allows, I still have a 20 minute soak (it's nice to now have that option).
While I wash with cotton pads and warm water several times a day, I am still having a small amount of discharge on cotton ball, though I hear this is normal for some time after LIS; quite a minor inconvenience, given the alternative! :D

JR,
congratulations! It only gets better from here on out.
I don't know how much discharge is normal, but mine is minimal (small spot or streak). Should mention that it was accompanied with blood for the first week and has a foul odor (I'm told this is also normal).
As for forgetting to ask, I don't think anybody ever does remember. I took a whole laundry list of questions to my follow-up appointment.
Just make sure to take things easy, keep the area clean, and take 2-3 sitz baths per day.

Yay Buckeye! Image I'm so glad you are doing so well! The discharge should slow down in a little while. Keep taking good care of yourself and you'll be pulling your big German Shepherd around before you know it. Image

Hopetoheal,
No discharge today, so I think things are slowing down. Cotton balls cost a fortune, so I am looking forward to no longer needing them!
Have a great great Christmas in the Great White North...eh!

Question Buckeye. I have been reading alot of people use cotton balls after surgery. Since mine is pending, I am wondering do you just put them up to the b hole and why cotton balls?? and how long do you leave them there?

Sue,
Some people use cotton, some use gauze (I found cotton to be more comfortable than gauze). According to my CRS, the cotton is used to absorb any blood/discharge; the alternative being lots of underwear changes. It also helps to keep blood/discharge off the incision site/sites.
As far as how to apply cotton, I just place it between the cheeks; no need to go any further. It can be a little uncomfortable at first, but I found that stretching the cotton a little made it more comfortable. Over the last month, I have got so used to it being there that I don't even realize that it's there, until it's not. Immediately after surgery, I would change them every hour or so and clean the area with warm water. Now, I change them as needed (3-4 X per day).
