Bleeding post LIS?

Postby Keystonegal » 16 Mar 2021, 10:13

Hi all,

I had my LIS on 2/5 and recovery was a bit rough, I caught COVID on 2/17 and coughing made the incision site sore and seemingly reopened my healing fissure. Fast forward to this morning. Everything has been GREAT - and I MEAN GREAT. No pain, no bleeding, well controlled BM's. I just went to the bathroom and afterward there was a red streak of blood.

I would love to hear from folks that have had a sphinterotomy on their post-op experience. It just so happens that I have a post-op appointment this afternoon.

TIA

I had one BM maybe 2-4 weeks after the surgery where I had a small streak of blood that had nothing to do with the LIS. That was the only time. Nothing else since November. I use a squatty potty now which really helps me go easier too. My stools are usually bulky and soft which is exactly what you want. And a few times when the stool was harder and dry, I took my time and let it come slowly without straining (which the squatty potty really helps with). If I ever see blood again (and I am sure at some point I may) I always use a bidet to clean (much less TP use to irritate the area) and I have a sitz bath standing by for treating the area if need be so it won't get out of control. A tiny fissure like you may have just had shouldn't really be a cause for concern.

Thank you so much for the reply. It has been a hellish month and to see blood this am was devastating. I feel a little itching/burning sensation and I really hope this is nothing to be concerned about.

Sure! Remember people can get an acute fissure at anytime and those are usually healed by the next BM. This includes us but we freak out because we had a chronic problem that ended in a surgery. Just because you had blood doesn't mean it's going to be a whole new nightmare. I am not saying it's 100% nothing to worry about but just keep it in perspective and unless it's been bleeding everyday it's way too early to assume the worst. Stay as positive as you can!

So it seems that the original fissure has had a slight retear - it’s red and raw. The PA called it a ‘setback’. The whole thing isn’t totally reopened. It’s definitely sensitive and causing intermittent pain, not to the extent that it did before, but it’s annoying. I am to use diltiazem for the next two weeks and sitz baths religiously and then go back at the two week mark for another checkup. I’m bummed. I sincerely hope this is just a slight setback and doesn’t evolve into anything else.

Oh no! I was thinking this could happen based on what you said, but because the bleeding was only today I wasn't too concerned. I didn't want to bring it up until you saw the doctor because it was worst case thinking. I am so sorry for you. Let's hope it will heal ASAP.

I’m sooooo unhappy. Still battling double lung pneumonia from covid and now this on top of it. I seriously hope this isn’t a botched surgery where he didn’t cut enough...

It wasn’t the surgeon, but his PA, who assisted with the surgery.

That would be unacceptable to me. My CRS is the head of colorectal surgery at the hospital it was done at. He teaches the others microsurgery and other surgeries. He was under my previous CRS who passed away and has been the main CRS for years. Seeing your CRS's PA is still not bad. The only issue I would have is that the CRS wasn't evaluating the situation directly especially with what you are going through now. I am sorry you are going through this AND Covid.
