I need this stuff to keep my BM's soft, but it's a laxative, so is this habit forming? if i stop taking it can i still have soft bm's with a high fiber diet?

You can try experimenting like we all do and have!

well, some web sites I have read say that it's not habit forming. Real laxatives make your bowels "sweat" which make you have a BM, but miralax only affects your stool.

My docs claim it is not habit forming, but I feel dependent on it although one of my docs thinks that might be psychological, but I know it isn't. All docs have told me this is the way to go if a person has chronic constipation like I do. The more fiber and less Miralax laxative, the better in my opinion. I take a lot less than I did in the past. Good luck!

Supposedly osmotic laxatives aren't habit forming. But I don't know of any long term studies that prove one way or the other. I think the current sphere of knowledge is based only on limited empirical data and the mechanism by which it works (i.e., it draws water into stool without actually irritating the colon).
