New to forum.

Postby Amychristine » 29 Sep 2019, 13:07

Hi there my name is Amy and I’m new to this forum. I have had a fissure for 7 years since the birth of my first child. I have tried all kinds of prescription creams, Botox, diet changes and nothing seems to cure it permanently. I didn’t tear for about a year and was pretty good then retore. Does anyone find that stress can cause flare ups? Sometimes I don’t eat perfect and I won’t flare and sometimes I eat decent and then I’ll have a flare up if something stressful has happened. I take magnesium citrate before bed and sometimes take olive oil as I’ve heard it helps with bowel movements as well. I’ve been to 3 drs over this and two surgeons and they don’t want to do surgery. All I’ve had done is an exam where they see the tear. No further testing. Sometimes I worry something else is going on but trying to trust the drs. I’m considering getting a referral to an actual proctologist. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am so tired of living with this thing as I’m sure many of you are too.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry that you have to be here, but hopefully our members will be able to give you some great advice.

As far as doctor referrals go though, it would help if you could tell us which city and country you live in.

So I ended up getting a referral to a proctologist. It’s going to be about a years wait. The dr seemed to think I would get incontinence with surgery but I’m confused because so many of you on here had no problems with it. Did you guys go to a proctologist or a general surgeon? Thanks.

That is an incredibly long wait. May I ask where you live? That also makes a difference as to whether or not the procedure will be a success, because if the doctors believe that it causes incontinence, they don't do many, which actually makes the success lower, because without practice, they're not overly great at doing it. A vicious cycle, really. Also, in some countries, surgeons are not keen on performing the surgery on women of child-bearing age. I went to a colo-rectal surgeon. They are the best at diagnosing, and treating anal issues.

I am in Kamloops BC Canada. I agree with you I know the one surgeon said she hasn’t done them in years and I doubt the other guy has done many. Where did you get yours done?

In Toronto. I've never had to wait long for specialist appointments here. I guess that waiting that long in Kamloops kind of makes sense though, since there wouldn't be nearly as many surgeons there. Are you able to travel? Would asking for a referral to a CRS in Vancouver be an option? Or even Calgary? There's no guarantee that they would agree to surgery either, but if you stress to them how much pain you've been in, all of the things that you've already tried, and how it's affecting your quality of life, they might agree to it. You might want to read about the "top 10" colorectal surgeons in Vancouver here, and read the patient reviews, to see if one of them strikes your fancy https://www.ratemds.com/best-doctors/bc ... octologist.

Oh thank you I can try that as well. I know the proctologist in Kelowna I have been referred to is very well rated. I am pregnant now so I will have to wait for surgery anyways. But I’ll check those out in Vancouver. Thank you. Would you mind telling me which dr you went to in Toronto?

Hey Amy. I know you’re pregnant and won’t be able to get the surgery done so I was wondering if you’ve tried applying manuka honey with olive oil on it? Also, dr wheatgrass skin recovery cream. These are just some safe options for healing while you’re pregnant.

Hi there I’ve tried olive oil but not constantly. I should try it with the honey or the wheatgrass you mentioned. I have a question for you guys. Is it normal to have more then one fissure? I think I have one bad one but noticed another one on the opposite end straight down.

Yes some people do get multiple fissures. Often doctors will recommend a colonoscopy to make sure there's nothing else going on that could be causing them.
8/16-12/16: Fissure due to antibiotics
5/17: Botox to sphincter, fissure healed
9/19: Trigger point injections and pudendal nerve block
11/19: Botox to pelvic floor
8/20: Botox to pelvic floor in new location.
On and off in pelvic physical therapy
