thanks nick, despite my doctors words of "don't read the internet" ringing in my ears I've made the purchase... To be honest I think this forum cumulatively has more accurate information than most GPs on this very specific topic..

Perhaps you don't need a lot of fancy stuff to help stop the itch. Plain vaseline helped me get rid of a really horrible itch. Take a warm bath and then rub a generous amount on the affected area. I think you need to protect your skin from excessive moisture (even creams are not good for you at some point), and try not to scratch even if it seems impossible. Scrathing only brings you relief for a very short time.

i have learnt a lot over the past 35 years in the bowel department courtesy of the staff at st marks hospital in London and this area of all areas on the body is the most difficult to treat correctly. most of the medicines used in the bowel give rise to either a itch or crate additional inflammation or both so getting the combination right of medicines to use was never going to be easy

Preparation-226613-H-Ointment can take time to see some progress in the case of piles for example but out of all medicine's used it can be used long term and will never give rise to making things worse where as all other medicines can in the long term hence this is why the bowel is so difficult to treat and turns out to be a life long nightmare for some people

nelsons H CARE is another good long term medicine that can be used in the case of piles or itch and this to works well long term for many

Hi tiki,

I would definitely suggest that you make a visit to your GP at least once to have a look down there. 90% of the times an anal itch means two things: haemorrhoids and fissures (not trying to scare you or anything). Because I can relate to your account totally! For months I ignored a terribly frustrating anal itch that would swap places with burning at times. It was possibly a very tiny fissure trying to heal itself when a larger than normal BM tore it open completely. I can share the rest of the story if you like :) Anyway, the point is: don't sacrifice that visit to your GP AT LEAST ONCE to get the presence of a fissure or something else out of context.

I have successfully tried this combination for a fissure and hems. It also provides immediate relief from itching.

In a small jar of about 50 ml mix 2 or 3 of these oils: sesame, olive, avocado or wheat germ oil. Sesame is the best but the others are also great. Then add about 10 drops of these essential oils: peppermint (or spearmint), cypress and tea tree. Apply 3 to 4 times a day when the itch or pain is bad and less later: before and after every BM, after showering and before going to bed. Application is by dipping the ring and middle finger in the jar, use a finger to spread around the itchy area and another finger to slide about 3 cms (1 inch) up the anus. This is difficult even unpleasant (I do understand), but it does work. It works very, very well. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Never double dip (ie replace your dirty finger into the jar). Good for hems and fissures. The essential oil really stops the itch very quickly. Basically you are lubricating the area for easier BMs and applying a good soothing dose of vitamins and anti-bacterials where they are needed.

well.. I seem to be getting nowhere fast. Last night was just like the old days, up for 2 hours in the night furiously scratching, I just couldn't help myself. Sometimes it actually feels like the itch is INSIDE.. it's horrible.

I bought the Preparation-226613-H-Ointment that Nick7 recommened but it doesn't do it for me.. to be honest I think because of the fact it's more of a thick oily gel than a cream (probably to make it super absorbant like it claims to be) it just itches like hell INSTANTLY after applying it.. the only thing that actually soothes the itch ironically was the dodgy herbal thing analcare I bought on ebay but I don't think that does anything towards curing it, just soothes it temporarily.

The doctor is going to refer me to a bowel specialist..

What is the real name of the "dodgy herbal thing analcare" and its ingredients? I bet it contains good and cheap oils.

sorry to everyone that replied before I wrote my "I seem to be getting nowhere fast message" I kept checking this thread, but my bookmark was for page 1 not 2.. doh!

ButtQueen (great name..) yes I've been to the GP twice, he confirmed I had 2 small fissures one at the top and one at the bottom which is consistent to where I feel the itch.

Bennatural.. making my own ointment worries me a bit but I'll give everything a go so will keep it in mind. The analcare is this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Analcare-Natu ... 2a35b78b0c

and ingredients on the tube list:

dromiceius oil, water, titanium dioxide, cetaryl clucoside and cetearyl alcohol, cera flava, aroma, calendula officinalis flower extract, hamamelis virginiana leaf extract and lots more that I'd need a bit more time to list, hopefully that gives an idea.

ButtQueen: I hadn't thought of a large BM causing a tear, I always thought it'd be aggresive scratching and squirming around that would do this. This has encouraged me to keep up my drinking of LOTS of water which I seem to be doing well with and I noticed this morning my BM was softer than it has been

just been to the doctor again as its been a month on the anusol (also tried prep h for a week) and no luck. He examined again and says it's NOT a fissure.. just an unexplainable burning itch!! I've got a stronger steroid cream now. He mentioned if its a fissure it would be largely pain instead of an itching sensation. He said the pain is meant to be unbearable and I thought about you poor souls!

I now just need to drink drink drink water and eat veg and fruit to try to prevent anything happening, but I suppose in theory I'm no more likely to have a fissure in the future than anybody else.. do you think thats right?
