LIS on April 28th - questions

Postby sotiredofthis » 19 Apr 2014, 09:34

My surgery is scheduled for April 28th and I'm wondering what to expect following surgery as far as what I can do. My cousin had this surgery 2 years ago with the same surgeon I'm seeing on a Thursday and went back to work on Monday. CRAZY!! I'm praying my recovery is as good!

As of now I'm only having LIS. She may do a fissurectomy when she gets in there but I won't know until I wake up.

When is it normal to be able to continue regular life. ie. laundry, cooking, yard work, walking my dogs, driving my kids to their activities, going to church, sitting on my butt etc.

If you were incontinent to gas, could you hear it? Smell it? I would be so embarrassed if that happens in public. Especially at church!! There are pads for that I've found online.

when is the risk of infection over?

When can you know if you're going to be incontinent or not? Right away or later?

Anyone use pads after surgery? If so, which ones and how long? I just saw an advertisement for a brand called Butterfly for accidental bowel leakage. I think I'm going to get those and maybe some Poise pads? What do you think?

I have IBS so I'm worried about leakage or actual stool loss if I have an attack. I'll have to be careful with any Mirilax. I only use stool softeners right now.

Thanks!

I had my LIS on a Friday. I took it VERY easy for the first few days. My only venture outside was Sunday to chat with some neighbors while the kids rode their bikes on the street. It was Wed. when I took a walk around the block...about half a mile. I think I took the kids somewhere in the car about that same time. By 1 week out I felt like I probably could have gone back to work...desk-bound stuff. I did not actually go back until the following Monday and did well. My suggestion...if you feel like you're ready to do something like the walk around the block, wait one more day.

I had a couple of times where gas slipped out on its own. But I could feel it both building up and escaping. I just couldn't stop it. That only lasted about 24 hours. After that I could hold it up if I had to.

I'm not a doctor but I would guess there is risk of infection as long as there's an open wound.

I used pads for drainage. I burned through my wife's supply pretty quickly. When I restocked I bought store-brand mini- and maxis, tapering to just the minis after about 2 weeks.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hey there. I have IBS, as well, and I had hardly any problems with incontinence, other than a little bit of gas once in a blue moon. But, even then, it's not like I couldn't tell it was going to happen - it's just a bit harder to hold in.

Thanks, Rachael. I saw my doctor for my pre-op on Wednesday and she is planning a very conservative cut. She said she can always go in and cut more if need be but best to be on the conservative side to lessen my side effects. I completely agree with that!

My fissure isn't terrible all the time, it just won't heal all the way and keeps re-tearing. That is when it is so incredibly miserable as you know! I also have a very high anal resting pressure which keeps it from completely healing. You know, I never thought in a million years I'd be having surgery on this part of my body!

Thanks for the wished and thoughts. I'll post how I'm doing as I go along. I'm nervous but feel like at this point I really don't have any other choice.

Here's to healing days!

Sotiredofthis, best of luck. Your experience sounds similar to mine. I didn't have pain all the time (which I am very grateful for!), but it just wouldn't heal. I hope everything goes well!
