How much water? Too much?

Postby vdb324 » 29 Apr 2014, 22:24

How much water do you intake each day?

I went from maybe 8 ounces a day pre-AF to around 100. Lately, I feel like I have been a bit more paranoid and have moved up to around 150 - more than I weigh.

Apparently, you can overhydrate, though.

I am a afraid to reduce the amount as this point. Is there a scale of diminishing returns in how well it helps keep the BMs soft? For example, does anything over my recommended amount even help at a certain point?

Personally, I don't think it hurts to drink that much water but I don't think it helps an AF either. I was drinking 150-200 ounces per day while breastfeeding and still getting hard stools. I reduced my breastfeeding and consequently my water intake (became less thirsty) and my stools are now soft. Clearly the water wasn't doing anything for my stools but the breastfeeding was making them hard. I don't think your body converts excess water into soft stools, it just makes you pee a lot.

Oh but I will say that 8 ounces is certainly not enough water. You should be drinking a lot more than that. My comment is more regarding excess water (ie: 80-100 ounces plus maybe?)...
