To Botox or not to botox

Postby SasaBasa » 24 Feb 2016, 03:13

Hi all,

Just wanted to get some advice regarding the Botox injection. I have had an anal fissure for 3 months and tried all of the conservative measures to allow it to heal. The first 2 months the pain was debilitating and I went to see a specialist who prescribed creams etc. Long story short, the last month has been almost pain free with occasional set backs of I pass a hard stool. Went back to the specialist yesterday and because it is still there, I am now I'm booked in for a Botox injection. Of course now I am fully read up on all the horror stories and have started having doubts. My question is, should I go for the Botox to try and allow the fissure to heal fully? Or am I taking an unnecessary risk when it has been behaving itself recently? It's difficult because I am afraid if I don't get the Botox, all I need is a hard stool to set it off, but if I go for the Botox then I am worried I will have the set back anyway and at the moment it isn't causing me problems. Any help to make this decision would be great!

Hi!

I was tossing with the idea to get Botox for a while, at one point I was healed for about 3 weeks then the next day I was back to square one for another month, this was on repeat for months. So I decided to receive Botox about 2.5 months ago and I have had no problems at all and I am completely healed!

I feel like Botox is such a great way to help heal with very minimal risks especially since you have only had the fissure for 3 months. I am so glad I did it!!!

Hope that helps!

Hi :)

Welcome to the Forum! I recieved botox a few years ago and it helped me for a few months but sadly the pain came back. it's all about management post botox I feel, so really focus on your dietary intake and fluid intake. Botox just paralyses the muscle and stops the spasm. A large part of the healing has to be done by us!

It's the lease invasive procedure apart from GTN so it can't hurt - of course there are risks and potential side effects but it helps a lot of patients. You just need to find the route cause of what caused the fissure origionally and stop that otherwise it can come back!
Suffering since June 2013

Methods tried:
GTN cream - migraines!
Manuka Honey / Coconut oil / Aloe
tag excision X 2, botox x 3
Dilatiazem
dilatation 2 X daily + Retin-C Vitamin Scar Treatment Oil 2 X daily - best thing ever.
Now pain free 2/7/21

I got completely healed from Botox. Two years pain free. Used miralax for 8 months after the intervention.

I also had Botox and would recommend trying it prior to more invasive measures.

Hi I am questioning the same thing. Booked in for Botox in 2 weeks. Have had the fissure for 7 weeks, finally not in much pain passing a bm, I had a set back a week ago with a large stool but now back to feeling on the road to recovery too. Since changing my diet to high fibre and cutting out meat I am having 3-4 bm's a day which I thing has slowed down the healing process. I don't know whether to get the Botox as I am scared of the recovery period as I have a 5 month old. If I feel healed before the Botox should I bother with it? I am using rectogesic ointment and a stool softener.

I had it twice over the past 12 months and although it wasn't successfull it did ease my symptoms. I did have some side effects from a continence point of view but the majority of the time I was fine and I did get used to it.

All in all I'm glad I gave it a try before having LIS.

Hi Reliefatlast, did you find that after Botox your sphincter muscles were no longer tight even though you had fissure pain? I had Botox last year and supposedly healed but still have all the symptoms of fissure except for a rock hard sphincter.
8/16-12/16: Fissure due to antibiotics
5/17: Botox to sphincter, fissure healed
9/19: Trigger point injections and pudendal nerve block
11/19: Botox to pelvic floor
8/20: Botox to pelvic floor in new location.
On and off in pelvic physical therapy
