My story continues! After an antibiotic induced fissure/hemorhoids I saw my family doctor again yesterday as I still have varied symptoms and days where all I do is cry because of pain. She was very thorough and said there is no fissure but she could see a very small thrombosed hemorhoid.

We talked about my symptoms and how one day I can feel pretty good then the next I could be really sore, the examination not hurting like I expected it too, and my history of pelvic nerve pain, she decided that nerve pain is the culprit.

I asked if the thrombosed hemorhoid would be this painful and she said it wouldn't, and it would heal on its own as long as I continued to eat sensibly (fibre etc). She prescribed amitriptyline to help with nerve pain and Prozac along with it for pain and the anxiety I've been suffering for the last couple of months since all this kicked off.

I feel she is right about nerve pain as I have had 2 incident of this in this area over the years, and took amitriptyline for a while until it subsided, but I can feel the discomfort and often pain from the spot where she said the hemorhoid is and that worries me. Will it really go away unaided?

She referred me to a specialist a month ago but I still have no appointment, and when I eventually get one she wants me to see him even if I'm feeling better by then, just so we know what's going/gone on.

I just feel uneasy and wondered what the experts (ie you!) thought.

A thrombosed hemorrhoid is excruciating. Take it from someone who has had one...

But, it should get better after a week, so hope you are doing better now.

I did wonder. Had a couple of better days and then yesterday it was bad again so I have no idea!

Yep, I second that. A thrombosis is hideously painful. I currently have one too (though it is thankfully healing). I would definitely recommend going to your CRS as soon as you can. I saw a GP who said I have a thrombosis but no anal fissure and told me there was no need to go back to my specialist. I decided I wouldn't heed her advice, however, as GP's have missed my fissure in the past and sure enough when I saw my CRS he said my fissure was very clearly still there as well as the haematoma. GP's are great, but they really don't have any expertise in this area and just don't know what they are looking at a lot of the time in my experience.

When I had my first thrombosed hemmie, my GP referred me to a CRS who she said could excise the clot and relieve my pain. When I saw the CRS two days later, however, he said that it was too late to remove the vein (I was probably at about day 5 at that point, because I didn't go to the GP right away), but told me instead, that my pain would increase until about day 10, when it would become unbelievably painful, but then would settle down again by about the two week mark. I was surprised to hear such a negative prognosis, and devastated when it came to pass. The pain was so bad that I actually wanted to die (at LEAST as bad as my later fissure pain). I had two more thrombosed hemmies in the next two decades and they too, made me pray for death. I have read about others on this board who've had thrombosed hemmies and they weren't that big a deal, and read many articles saying that thrombosed hemmies "can be painful", so it is obviously more difficult for some people than for others, or perhaps it depends on which vein is affected and how large or small it is. Also, the trajectory of a thrombosed hemmie is up, up, up, up, up and then down and gone, it does not come and go as you describe. So you may have a small, thrombosed hemmie as your doctor suggests, or perhaps what she thinks is one, could in fact be a skin tag caused by a fissure. Since this could also be nerve pain though, you should seek the advice of a CRS and I hope that you can get an appointment with one soon. Good luck!

Thanks sore, been back to my own GP today. She agreed that it's a thrombosed hemorhoid and has written to the specialist again to tell him I need to be seen. She has prescribed me a steroid ointment which I have to pick up from the pharmacy when it's ready. Not sure of the name but starts with 'n'. Maybe this will shrink it as I can feel it more now than ever and it hurts for hours after going to the bathroom.

I can't help thinking if I'd had the appointment weeks ago when first referred I'd be feeling better by now :-(

Thanks cha cha cha. I keep wondering if and when this will end. It's at least 10 days since the first doc picked up on the thrombosed hem but I have no idea if that's what it was before. Hoping the cream will help and that I actually get an appointment in the next week or two. This has gone on too long!

Here we are 3 weeks on and still no appointment. I'm having more better days but still not right. I'm finding the nifedipine almost impossible to get the ointment out of the bottle. It's so thick you almost need an extra hand to push the bottom so that the ointment comes out at the top. I have no idea how much I'm actually getting and nearly rupturing myself in the process! The best I can do is use it topically.
My family doctor has nothing more to offer me and with no specialist appointment I'm pretty much on my own. I guess I'm just hoping that this will eventually go away on it's own if I keep on doing what I'm doing.
