Fiber aids

Postby cherylk » 27 May 2008, 16:37

Guys and gals,
I could not find a topic listed previously on fiber aids. Is it more an individual choice (i.e. some work better for some and some work better for others)? I used to use Fiber Choice which gave me a lot of gas. I am thinking of trying either Citrucel which I have on hand or buying Metamucil powder in order to make my fiber intake more stable and not relying entirely on foods as I have been doing. I would welcome any feedback unless this has already been discussed and I missed it.
Best wishes to all,
Cheryl K.
Thank you for all of the birthday wishes that were sent to me.

Yes, Cheryl, it is so individual , unfortunately , you will have to experiment until you find the perfect one. For me Metamucil works the best and I also started using Fibersure ( the invisible one) in my teas and bottled water when I go out. I ordered some Glucomannan
and although it did not give me gas- it gave me stomachache - go figure : (. Actually it took me a couple of days to figure that G. was
the culprit and I am very sorry about that since I had a feeling that it helped.
The only advice I can give you regarding Metamucil is to read the instructions - sugar free is 1 TEA spoon and regular 1 TABLE spoon in 8 oz of water. Also, I was told by more than one CRS to stay away from Metamucil pills since they supposedly do not work as well. I tried them and they proved to be right- my poop was like normal part, than 5 fluffs of poop (5 opened pills) , than normal poop !!! I have the best result if I take Metamucil just before the food or sip it together with food - like s it is a water or orange juice.
Best of luck !!!

Cheryl,
I use Metamucil too. But I eat the wafers at least one a day. I try to make sure I eat the rest of my fiber between fruits, veggies and cereals. But Fissys right it is up to each individual. Gradually add fiber into your diet cause it can be gassy. Good Luck.

I use Digestive Advantage which is a capsule of Glucomannan and a probiotic. I tried to just take the Glucomannan on it's own but it did not work as well so I am back to these expensive pills.

I also like Andrew Lessman's Fibermucil capsules. It has psyllium and a probiotic and those really help to bump up the fiber if I am low one day, but I have taken them every day with good success. You can get them from www.procapslabs.com or www.hsn.com

I take fibersure or benefiber in my water, like 15 grams/litre of completely soluatble fiber. I also found that the Digestive Advantage pills (the ones for Chronic Constipation) work better than the glucomannan alone. It must be the probiotics....
Psyllium and grain fibers like metamucil never worked well for me.

Lecia and Chris - do you have any "laxative" effects from Digestive A. caplets ? I would really like to try them but am afraid I would go 5 times instead of 3 times like I do now : ( .

Can anyone tell me what to do with the Metamucil? I bought it once along time ago (in a galaxy far far away) and it was these little beads - How do you ingest those?

Fissy-I didn't have any problem with runny stool with the product. It just kind of makes it easier to pass, soft, but formed. You could just try one and see how you do on that. I can't imagine it would run right through you.

Sorry, I don't know much about citrucel or metumucil but my hubby swears by Konsyl. It is a fiber powder that he puts in his smoothies and keeps him regular.
