Feeling optimistic with homegrown treatment

Postby Sunflower3 » 04 Jul 2022, 16:28

I have consulted this forum many times over the past year but have never posted until now when I realized that the recent success I've had might be helpful to others. I am an ovarian cancer survivor who had major surgery which included removing two-thirds of my colon; the result has been frequent BMs and the development of a very painful AF over a year ago. I have been on nifedipine suppositories and ointment (as well as nitroglycerin) but with little relief. I have been told by three colo-rectal specialists that it would not heal as long as I was on continued chemotherapy. A couple of months ago, a relative of a friend who is a wound care nurse offered a suggestion that has proven to be very helpful. She said that in addition to the nifedipine, it is important that there is always a barrier cream in the anus. She recommended a combination of Desitin Daily Defense Cream (this is not the ointment you buy in the store; it comes in a 16 oz. container and is ordered online) with generic bacitracin ointment. The proportion is supposed to be half and half, but I think I have used more cream than bacitracin. It is important to make sure this is inserted into the anus BEFORE every BM (I use a finger). After a few weeks, I no longer had the severe pain with BMs or the terrible pain afterwards. My fissure is still there but it is tolerable with this remedy. I have also had a break from chemo which I think has helped but I am convinced that this concoction has made the biggest difference. Hope it can help some of you!

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been using Zincofax instead of Desitin cream. It contains 15% zinc oxide mixed with petrolium jelly. Bacitracin ointment seems like a good try. I've been looking for things to apply directly to the fissure. I find it strange that most medical treatments aim to relax the sphincter muscles and let the body heal itself. An antibacterial ointment that promotes wound healing sounds good. I'll look into Bacitracin ointment.

Hope it's helpful! (I'll check out the Zincofax).
