Dano you are funny! I always think how you used the nitro twice as much as your doctor told you to and I want to do that too, but I am scared that too many vessels will dilate down there and something really bad will happen to me. I also want to try to mix my nitro and nifedipine but I am afraid some terrible chemiccal reaction will occur on my butt - I wish I could have our compounding specialist (Yes thats you Fissy) whip something up for me! She's not afraid to mix anything in her lab! :)

Wow Fiss - 4% nitro! That stuff is used in explosive devices! Image
My nitro bottle says .13% on it - maybe that means 1.3%??? I don't know - its seams to be working well. I wish I could use it more often - I am just so scared to use it more than I should.

It is very confusing in the literature. Some sources give 0.2% and other give 2%, and I am sure many pharmacists probably compound it at 2%. But there is a tenfold difference in the two numbers!
1.3 vs .13 would just be the same confusion, just a different set of numbers, but there isn't a huge difference in 2% vs 1.3% or .2% vs .13%.
Nitro is potent stuff and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it were actually 0.2%!!! (or 0.13, whichever)
Val, I hope you are doing OK and I have been praying for you...

Neil H. Hyman1 and Peter A. Cataldo1
(1) Department of Surgery, University of Vermont College of Medicine, Fletcher 301, 05405 Burlington, Vermont
Abstract PURPOSE: Topical nitrates have been shown to cause nitric oxide-mediated relaxation of the internal anal sphincter. Previous reports have suggested initial efficacy in the treatment of anal fissures. The aim of this study was to assess the longer-term usefulness of this treatment. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with an anal fissure were treated with topical 0.3% nitroglycerin ointment, applied to the anoderm three times per day and after bowel movements. Patients were followed up by office visits and telephone calls until symptoms were completely resolved or treatment was noted to be ineffective or intolerable. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were treated, 16 with acute fissures, and 17 with chronic fissures. Nitroglycerin was effective in 9 of 16 acute fissures (56%), and 7 of 17 chronic fissures (41%). Even when effective, 75% of patients reported an adverse reaction. CONCLUSIONS: Topical nitroglycerin was only effective in approximately one-half of patients with an anal fissure. There was a very high incidence of adverse reactions. In our experience nitroglycerin more often causes a headache than treats the symptoms of anal fissure.

I guess than that mine was actually 0.4 % - I will have to dig in my "butt basket" and try to find ancient ointment - ha ha, well, whatever - I survived - my butt did not :flush:
