5 weeks post-surgery update

Postby juney » 19 Jun 2007, 15:22

So last week I posted for the first time on how frustrated I was with the slow progress after my sphincterotomy surgery.
Today it has been exactly 5 weeks since the surgery. I'm beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm extremely optimistic about it for the first time since my surgery! :)
I've been verrry cautious with my diet, but last night had pizza for the first time since the surgery. I was paranoid it would cause problems with my BM this morning, but everything has been fine.
I've started taking flaxseed oil twice a day, along with the stool softeners. I'm having more of a dull pain now, a "sore" feeling and occassionally some itchiness. (Maybe this is what my surgeon meant by "sore" for a few weeks after the surgery).
I'm still taking 3 warm baths a day and also up to 4 ibuprofen just to combat the soreness and also to adjust my body to not feeling as much pain all the time. I will ease up on those as needed. I think this is all a sign that things are progressing. It just took awhile!!! My fingers are crossed that I keep feeling better, day by day.
I'm so glad I found this site when i was feeling at my lowest (both before and after surgery). It's a god-send for anyone suffering with what we've all dealt with. The advice and words of encouragement are so helpful. :)

You seem to have been a slight exception to the rule...most people reach the point you've just made it to pretty fast after surgery.
You can lighten up on the diet a tad, but try not to indulge for a while. Keep drinking fluids and getting your recommended fiber.
In another week or two you will be even better, no doubt!. Now, don't let a little blood on your TP scare you, either...it is OK for a healing fissure to occasionally bleed...

That's great news, Juney. Sometimes things seem their darkest before the light! I am glad you are noticing improvement and progress in your recovery. That is encouragement for all of us here too.
Take care!

i know i am an exception to the sphincterotomy recovery "rule". i don't know why it is, i suppose some people's bodies just have different ways of dealing with trauma. I sure wish i'd been one of the quick healers!! i think i may have had a setback somewhere along the recovery process which made it take so long. I have another follow up with my surgeon next week so i'm curious to ask if he's ever had a patient take this long to feel healed.

ah juney,
what matters now is that you feel that you are on the road to recovery. and even if your doctor says you are the longest, then that just mean you are the 'special'-est! :-)
anyway, it is great that you are in better spirits.
it helps a lot when you feel great about your recovery.
let the good recovery continue!

only a few days after i posted this thread, feeling so optimistic, i think i've had another set back. the same pain i'd been feeling before is back, and as strong as ever. my bowel movements are still soft and painfree, it's only afterwards that i'm sore and have occasional stabbing pains. everytime i stand up after sitting the pain is there. i'm doing everything possible to heal this thing - stool softeners, flaxseed oil, tons of water, hot baths 3x a day.... i even had the surgery! what is WRONG with me??
did anyone who's had the surgery still have any pain or discomfort at all this long after?? is it possible that the fissure could take this long to heal even after the surgery? could i still be in a recovery phase?? is it possible that the surgery just didn't work? and if so, what are the options once you've tried everything including surgery?!
i know i probably seem like a broken record since i started posting here, but i am so discouraged once again. i just want my life back. i have my 6-week post op appointment w/ the surgeon on monday. hopefully he will have something encouraging to say. in the meantime, any wise words or advice would be awesome. :(

You're still ONLY at 6 weeks. I am at week 20 after my surgery (granted not an LIS, butI did have an abscess drained from the inside), and I'm still not healed. I am presently sitting on a heatingpad for relief.

If you had a few good days, even if they are followed by bad ones, take heart! You are healing!! slowly butt surely. Three steps forward two stpes back is still moving forward overall. this evening, after the spasm calms, just think of how you felt at week 1.

what has your dr said about your slow recovery? 20 weeks is such a long time! has your dr said that's "normal" recovery time for your rectal surgery? at what point do you know something's wrong as opposed to just being a slow healer?

I'm going to see a CRS at the end of this week to get a specialists opinion. I'll let you know what he thinks about the recovery time.
