Anyone have this problem?

Postby lurker53 » 10 Jun 2011, 09:55

I have had a couple of fissures for over a year now and they have bothered me on and off. Miralax pretty much keeps them in control but I had a re-tear about a month ago when I stupidly went off the Miralax for a few days.
I have been using my diltiazem consistently for the last month and haven't had any pain with BMs and had blood just once. However, the area around my anus has become very raw and when I wipe it when the moisture builds up I get a pinkish/red discharge on the TP. This also happens after the second wipe after a BM.
I had seen my CRS last year about this when the fissure first flared up and he said it looked like excessive moisture causing the skin to break down. He told me to use soft gauze pads in there to mop up the excessive moisture.
I think the excessive moisture from the diltiazem may have caused this. Anyone else run into this issue?
I have stopped using the diltiazem because the raw, weeping skin around my anus is my biggest problem now, not the fissures.

Hi Lurker - Welcome! I'm so sorry you are suffering.
I have heard of this problem - it's not so unusual. Some folks say that putting corn starch on the area really helps. I've not tried it, though, so maybe others can chime in.
Also, if you haven't done this already, you might want to modify your diet. Eliminate, at least for a while, everything cafeinated and carbonated and all citrus and spicy food too. That might give the tissue time to recover from whatever is traumatizing it.
I hope you get some relief very soon!

Yup I've had this, both before LIS when my fissure was really bad, and also after LIS. I'm not sure what causes it to be honest. It may be the Miralax causing slightly more "slippery" stools maybe? I take Miralax every day too and always kind of attributed it to LIS causing very mild incontinence (I know this doesn't fully fit since I had it before LIS too).
It may also have to do with the spasming sphincter, I suppose. Maybe the spasms allow some stool through.
All just speculation, but for what it's worth, I've had this and have seen others mention it frequently on this forum as well.

It actually feels like I wiped repeatedly with sand paper and the skin around the anus is raised, red and really puffy and sore. I wonder if it's hemorrhoids?
I can understand if it's stool leakage, that would be brown, but this is like a bloody pink/red that is on the tp when I wipe. Like right now I can feel raised bumps around the anus and I know if I went and wiped it hard I would get that red/pink on the tp and the more I wiped the more I'd get.
Anyone have hemorrhoids? I don't know what they look or feel like but this is like my skin has been rubbed raw and now it's all puffy.

Hmmmm ... that sounds like inflammation to me, or maybe an infection or an allergy. I suppose it could also be hemorrhoids, but I think hemmies are more solid lumps that hurt quite a bit when they are external. I'm not a doctor, so I'm just guessing, of course. I definitely think you should see a doctor to rule out infection, and so that you know what you're dealing with and can do what you have to do to get healed.
