Why LIS isn't recommended for some females

Postby Davo » 29 Feb 2012, 08:51

I stumbled across this on BUPA's website and thought it may go part way to explaining why some CRS's are reluctant to give LIS to females.
Is there any reason why anal sphincterotomy shouldn't be performed in women?
Answer
Anal sphincterotomy isn’t recommended as the treatment of choice for women of childbearing age because it may increase their risk of being unable to control their bowel movements.
Explanation
Women who suffer trauma during childbirth are particularly at risk of developing problems with bowel control. A potential complication of anal sphincterotomy includes damage to the anal sphincter muscle, which can lead to problems with bowel control. For this reason, anal sphincterotomy isn’t recommended as the treatment of choice for women of childbearing age.
The advancement flap technique is a better option and offers considerable advantages for women of childbearing age. This procedure involves replacing the broken tissue in the fissure with healthy tissue. The operation may involve using a tissue graft taken from another part of your body or local skin or tissue flaps.

For pity's sake Davo,
are you trying to freak out all the women on the forum?
Have you read about advancement flap surgery?
It stands a MUCH bigger risk of complications than LIS, is much more painful and it takes months to recover.
It is not a equal alternative.
Plus there are tests that can be done to verify a person's risk of incontinence before deciding on LIS as a way to go.
It's really not that cut and dried.

Awww Tanya I wasn't trying to scare people!!
I remember a few posts recently from females asking why CRS's were recommending against LIS for women of childbearing age. So when i found this whilst browsing the BUPA website i thought i would post it for information purposes.
This is not saying you are at risk by having LIS but actually telling you the reason why LIS would be declined if a CRS thought you were at risk.
Sorry if i have scared anyone - It was only meant to help Image

I didn't mean to bite your head off Davo, sorry.
Just the thought of that alternative... well lets not go there.

Thanks for that info Davo. May go some way to explain why they are not keen to do that on me. Although, I am much better but still having my off days. Nowhere near as bad as before, but think this is only as I'm back on the rectogesic! Hope you are good, LIS not far away now for you! :)
