Miralax = Burning

Postby Pilot » 04 May 2012, 19:32

Hello All,
I have had a chronic anal fissure since Nov 2011.
It is absolutely miserable, and really effects my work, and home life.
I'm panicked to have a BM at work because the extreme burning sensation and pain afterwords.
It literally feels like a hot poker is being jammed up there.....
I had been taking 2 Aleve Liquigels to relieve the pain, and normally it took about an hour for the pain to die down. I had been taking Miralax first thing in the morning as it was suggested to me by a doctor.
I then found a post here (I can't post the link in the form, but just google "does miralax cause burning" and choose the ehealthme.com, it should be the first result) that Miralax can cause a burning sensation in some of the test cases!!
I quit the miralax and after a day and a half, after a BM, there is NO BURNING anymore.
I have switched over to Organic India Psyllium Husk twice a day, and a Colace in the evening.
This still keeps my stool soft, and the burning pain is absolutely gone.
So if you are experiencing this type of burning sensation after a BM, and are on Miralax, this is most likely the culprit, after all the ingredient seems to be something like Antifreeze, Polyethelyne Glycol..... which can't be too awful healthy for you anyway.
So I hope this bit of advice can help you if you are in the same situation.
My fissure is healing and I am doing a very warm sitz bath twice a day.
The doctor advised bloodflow to that area is not great, so with a warm sitzbath it draws blood to that area and promotes healing.
This is an absolutely horrific condition, and I hope to never get a fissure again, the last months have just been horrible.
Good luck :)

Hey pilot,
Welcome!
Thanks for the info on miralax.
I think the worst thing about this condition is that you can't just be open about it.
I'm so glad you are healing! People really need to learn to help themselves when it comes to fissures, because there's no single path to healing that works for everyone.
Thanks for the info about the sitz baths bringing blood to the area. I find that walking is good for that too.
Hope you heal quickly!

I also found that miralax caused burning at first but now I only need to take about 1/3rd packet and it helps keep everything soft. I think at first I was in such agony and so desperate to try anything and everything that I tried too much all at the same time so the burning was unbearable (milk of magnesia was probably worst for me but I was taking that as well as miralax).
I also have a spoonful of flax seeds with probiotic yoghurt every evening and think that is helping me.
Honestly at first, my pain was a 10 out of 10. I went to urgent care twice not believing a fissure could cause this much agony, I had an MRI scan just to check as I could barely move and I was literally begging the doctor not to let me leave her office without making me better and wanted to hit her when she said it would take time. I even went to a homeopath thinking there had to be a natural remedy that could help (it didn't!)-$250 that cost me but i was happy to try EVERYTHING!!! But (I don't even want to tempt fate by saying it aloud) but I think I am finding what works for me and have been pain free for a couple of weeks-I am paranoid about a retear so am still bring extra careful. I didn't like GTN as I got headaches but the nifedipine worked better for me.
Anyway, I love this forum and read it all the timr so thank you all for understanding and continuing to offer suggestions.

I found the same problem with Miralax at full dose, which also tended to give me more diarrhea than I already suffer with. So, I use one stool softener and just a tiny bit of Miralax (no more than half teaspoon) in addition to acacia fiber, which is better fiber for me than psyllium as it has no insoluble fiber so it doesn't bulk up the stool and makes things very easy to pass. I found psyllium not only too bulking, but also too scratchy for me on exit when I didn't grind it far enough into a very fine powder.
