I've been experimenting...

Postby Jenbug » 01 Feb 2012, 14:56

And while I gave up beef, I did not give up bison.
It doesn't bother my stomach, affect my stools, and it's leaner and I think has a better taste.
Maybe it's a good alternative for a sometimes food for other people who really crave a steak or a burger?

I really like the taste bison.
Perhaps it agrees with you more because it is usually more organic (no antibiotics and/or growth hormones, no pesticides from their feed)?
I can't give up red meat as I have low iron levels, and I like it ; )
Glad you found a way to keep enjoying it!

I think so! I've been getting my meat, eggs and dairy from a local organic/free range farmer who doesn't use corn feed at all. There are no antibiotics or growth hormones used, you're right.
I've also been staying away from anything with high fructose corn syrup, which has made a HUGE difference in my IBS, more than the medication. Maybe this is something to be looked into as well?
I firmly disbelieve that we digest HFCS the same way as cane sugar now.

Right there with you Jen.
I hated those ads the HFCS had on the TV for a while there, trying to say our bodies digest it the same as any other sugar.
It's like you can say anything you want on TV and not be held accountable.
There's books out there on food additives, perhaps you could find one at the library. There might be other additives that are bothering you as well?
I drive my husband nuts, stopping to read all the ingredients when we're grocery shopping. Sometimes even a brand you trust, will change it ingredients with no warning. Usually so they can make it cheaper.
Like I loved Tom's of Maine deodorant, until they got bought by Palmolive. Then all of a sudden I started getting rashes under my arms. I was so mad!
Hershey's started putting castor bean oil in their chocolate, so I made sure I didn't buy any of it last Halloween. ick.
That's wonderful that you found such a simple way to help your IBS!
I'm reading this book that jr recommended to me about pelvic floor dysfunction. Mostly because I think I carry a lot of tension down there now. So anyways, they mention that one of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction can be IBS.
It's called "Heal Pelvic Pain" by Amy Stein.

If you find your IBS symptoms easing by reducing fructose in your diet you might want to check out the low FODMAP diet. Many people with IBS have been helped by limiting the amount of not only fructose but other types of foods as well. Doesn't mean you have to give foods up, but rather find your tolerance level. It isn't surprising that if you are someone with a fructose sensitivity you would handle table sugar far better than HFCS. Just Google FODMAP and you will find loads of sites describing the diet, the foods to limit or avoid, and the idea behind why this diet helps many IBS sufferers.

So far it's just been HFCS. I've even gone to the extent of making my own jams for toast. And I've been making my own whole grain bread because even that has HFCS in it!
I've also bought a side of bison and three free range chickens from the farmer who sent them to a local butcher to be processed for me.
Venison is another red meat I've found doesn't bother me at all..but this got me to wondering. Maybe if the beef was grass fed and not CORN fed it wouldn't be so hurtful?
This no HFCS kick has got me noticing how corn affects our bodies, chicken, beef, pork..it's all basically corn because of their feed.

I used to love bison meat. But after a motorcycle trip to South Dakota touring Custer State Park, I encountered so many of them on the wildlife road and was so impressed with what remarkable creatures they are, I swore I would never eat the meat of another one. At one point several of them blocked the road and just sat right down and camped out. I was going to try to ride in between them, but my son convinced me to turn around and we took another route.
I am aware that the promotion of bison as a food has improved their population, but I just love the damn things. I had previously encountered dozens of them at Yellowstone and did not have the same reaction. The ones at Custer were just huge and regal.
I don't mean to put you down for your decision. What you eat is fine with me. Just not something I'll ever do again.

If you don't mean to put me down, then don't :) Good for you and your decision, but there are others here that have had problems giving up red meat and due to the minimal processing and grass fed nature of FARM raised bison, it's important to know there are options.

Re-read my post. I did NOT put you down for your decision in any way. All I did was state where I stand on the issue.
