Confused about carbs

Postby whatwhat » 02 Jul 2012, 14:56

I know I am aiming for high soluble fibre here in my diet but where do carbs come in?
I have spotted some really high fibre wholegrain stuff that is very high in carbs too. Does this matter? Should this affect AF's?
Such foods include:
Rye Bread
Wholemeal pasta/bran fortified bread
Lentils
Quorn (not that high in fibre but good alternative to red meat)
Also if anyone can help me to collate a list of stuff I should be avoiding that would be really useful too example
Red meat
Alcohol
etc
Thanks all

Whole grains generally contain more insoluble fiber than they do soluble fiber with the exception of oatmeal, which is high in soluble fiber. I don't eat much in the way of grains except oatmeal because I find they bulk my stool too much, but this is a totally individual thing that everyone has to experiment with.
red meat, alcohol, and caffeine are generally not advisable, but not everyone needs to avoid these things completely. Again, individuals vary so much.
Fruits and vegetables are good sources of soluble fiber and usually have a good balance of soluble to insoluble. Beans are a good source of soluble fiber if they don't give you problems with gas, which can be really painful to pass for fissure sufferers. Lentils would fall into this category.
Other than that it just takes a lot of experimenting to see what works for you. For example, some people on the board swear by brown rice. But I find the amount of insoluble fiber in brown rice makes my stools too bulky. I had the worst recurrence ever after eating brown rice. So it goes to show that while there are general guidelines no one diet works for everyone. Keeping a food journal and recording the effect it had on your bowel movement can help you narrow down foods that help and foods to stay away from.

Thank you so much jr2. That post has helped me clock that the diet I am having at the mo is in the right direction to AF friendly.
I have got some fibre fortified wholemeal bread which I will eat in extreme moderation as and when I crave it horribly.
I have found that I do feel a bit tired and a bit wobbly without my usual amount of red meat diet, but I suppose that is to be expected for a while. Cutting it out if certainly working for me so far so I can't really complain.
