Newly diagnosed, questions

Postby @johnny » 11 Nov 2012, 11:03

Hi,
I had on and off rectal bleeding for over a year. In the last couple of days, the bleeding got wrose so i went to my family dr. I told him that it was on and off for a year etc. He did a digital rectal exam and said you have a small fissure, the exam actually made it bleed a lot. He made a referral to a specialist which im going to go see later.
My question is: is it normal that the pain is really mild but there is a lot of blood ? It keeps bleeding even after im done in he bathrom....
He prescribed some cortisone cream to apply with every bowel movement. Is that going to help the wound close ?
Any advice is appreciated.

Hi there Johnny, and welcome!
Do have a search through the posts as there is a lot of information on the best doctors to see for AF (colon and rectal surgeons), and doctors who prescribe cortisone creams. They help a bit, but can start to thin the skin in an already traumatized area if used for more than two weeks. Better for AFs are either Diltiazem or Nifedipine, or nitro - all compounded, if you live in the USA. There is a lot of info about these too on here.
Blood can be normal, but only being tested for blood in the stools will give you an idea of what is going on. Straining can cause bleeding, as can hemorrhoids.
Best of luck!
