How to avoid constipation after op?

Postby SteveR » 10 Dec 2012, 23:59

So my op date for more Botox is on Thursday. This is op no.3. Each time before I ave had really bad constipation, which is not good with a fissure!!! Ouch.
So this time I'm avoiding morphine and refusing to take home codeine.
Also a I'm taking lactulose now I'm going to double my dose in the am before the op and again in the evening after the op, and perhaps having double doses til I go again. Although very unsure about doing so.
Anyone got any good ideas - and how to cope if I do get constipation again!

I had between 15-20ml a day which was enough but the bottle says up to 45ml in first 3 days. If you are eating enough fibre then it should be enough but without fibre I guess you could increase the dosage from 20ml.
Just don't take too much as you don't want to end up with diarrhoea. I took a bit much and combined with all bran it caused an upset stomach! Oops!
Drinking plenty of water will avoid constipation also.
Good luck mate! You'll be fine :)
Also try and relax. Stress/anxiety can cause constipation.

I've just made a long post on your other thread about avoiding constipation after the op. :)

I just had surgery a few days ago and was terrified of constipation as well. I got really constipated after hernia surgery this summer, so I really wanted to avoid it this time around. The night of surgery I drank tons of water, made fruit smoothies with apple juice, water, raspberries, strawberries, and powdered fiber supplement. The next day I continued with more fiber, stool softeners, and tons of water. This really seemed to do the trick. Good luck!
