fissure or not?

Postby SeanVK1 » 21 May 2013, 13:39

I saw a doctor today because of the pain I have that lasts several hours after a bowl movement. I don't have any pain during the movement its always after. There is never any blood. He thinks I have a fissure just by how I described it. He did not do a physical exam. what do you think? Isn't there usually blood in your stool when you have a fissure?

I forgot to mention that a saw a different doctor a few months ago to check me for Hemorrhoids. He told me I had a few superficial hemorrhoids and he didn't see any fissures. I told the doctor this today and he told me that they could be very small. He prescribed Rectiv and wants to see me in three weeks.

Not all fissures bleed. Though most do hurt during a bowel movement. When mine was healing it would only hurt after the BM. No way of really knowing until you get it checked out

Sean,
My fissure NEVER bled but I had one for sure....
Like you I never had major pain ever with a BM just for a few hours afterwards.
You need to get referral as soon as you can to a Color-Rectal Surgeon, who are specialists in these issues and request a more thorough examination down there. The reason I say asap, is because the sooner you get the proper advice on how to start treating the fissure, the higher the chance of healing it as quickly as possible before it potentially becomes chronic.
The Recto may well possibly help you and definitely start using it, but you generally need to use it for longer than 3 weeks for full effects, so I would still suggest an appointment with a CRS for proper investigation.
All the very best to you..........

thanks for all your reply's. The doctor I saw today was an gastroenterologist. That is the closet specialist in my area. Today was mostly a consultation. Im hoping he wants to do a more in-depth examination the next time I see him.

I agree with Ever the Optimist: you definitely need to see a colorectal surgeon (CRS), not a G.I. doctor (fissures are not their specialty). You want to see someone that deals with anal issues like fissures on a daily basis.
Good luck!

I definitely would. The problem is there isn't any around here. I did a search and could not find one in Iowa or Illinois. That may sound strange but several internet searches came up this zero. I work at a hospital (mercy medical center Clinton IA) I asked most of the docs there if the new of one around here and they didn't.
