100 pain free days and counting...

Postby muzgut22 » 30 Aug 2013, 09:40

Hello Everyone,
I've thought about the day when I would be able to write this post a lot. I mean A LOT. It's a wonderful feeling to get to this day and to the point where I finally feel confident enough in my healing to write it.
A little background on myself: I am a 25 yr. old female. I think I have had fissure in the past, but my chronic fissure started in Oct 2012. I remember the day (and the unfortunate poop) when it happened. I struggled with the pain and some spasms until I gave in and went to a general doctor who diagnosed me with hemorrhoids (she didn't even look down there). Shortly after I found this blog and realized I had a fissure. Early in Dec 2012 I went to a colorectal specialist who confirmed that I had a fissure. He prescribed me Rectiv and lidocaine ointment and gave me some helpful diet tips.
I used the rectiv for a week until I gave up. It burned a little and made me feel uncomfortable. I felt I had to poop all the time. Additionally, I have been lucky enough to only suffer mild spasms that were eased with hot soaks so the nitro wasn't helping much. So I stopped. I went through weeks were I had 3 days with no pain only to retear again. From Oct 12- May 13 I must have had at least 10-12 retears. It was an emotional rollercoaster. At some point, I even had 2 fissures. I seemed to be able to go pain free for 3-7 days but somehow ended up retearing. I never really considered surgery simple bc I didn't have very intense spams, so I never thought it would be a solution. I came to the conclusion that it had to be something in my eating habits. Just eating a piece of something that wasn't good for me set me back. So I decided to change once and for all. As difficult as it is, I decided I was only and exclusively going to eat things that produced the ideal poop.
For me those foods were: oatmeal, fresh fruits (but absolutely NO bananas), steamed veggies, beans, & salads.
Things I did not eat: Bananas, potatoes, pasta, bread (not even whole grain), steak, alcohol, etc.
Super foods that helped me: Fresh papaya (I have a post about this), cherries, mango & lots of beans.
I started a routine that included getting in the bathtub with warm/hot water before and after a bowel movement and any time during the day I could. Note that I work full time; not working was not an option for me so I had to adapt. I started taking note of what I ate and when I went to the bathroom. After about a week I realized that I could poop in the morning before work (usually after drinking a cup of coffee) and then at night after work. Going two times a day was ideal. I've concluded that the longer you go without pooping, the harder the poop becomes. So please for those of you trying to avoid the bathroom, DON"T DO IT! I also lubricated with a little vaseline before going. After soaking and cleaning up I started using Carlson Vitamin E suppositories for the burning. After about a week and a half of pooping twice a day and following this routine, the pain subsided. But this is the difficult part, not having the pain and continuing to do every single thing. I had been down that road before so I needed to make sure this time was different. It might seem silly but I did the following:
- printed out inspirational quotes and put them up around my room, kitchen & bathroom
- got an Iphone app called Big Day lite and started counting the days I had been pain free
- started writing with a lipstick on my bathroom mirror how many days I had been pain free. I remember when I wrote down 10, it was such a great feeling.
Long story short, I was consistent every day, every hour and here I am. 100 Days pain free and counting. At around 50 days I started incorporating back some food items I enjoy such a bread & meat. So far I have been able to eat them as long as my meal is mostly compromised of veggies and fruits.
This post is becoming very long but other items that have helped me: I take half a dose of miralax every day (can't live without it). When I feel my meal does not have enough fiber, I take one or two Metamucil caps; I take fish oil capsules twice a day.
My most valuable tips:
1) Find a diet that allows you to poop twice a day
2) Avoid breads or foods that are dry, regardless of how much fiber they have, have a diet full of "watery" foods like fruits & veggies
3) Always lubricate before a poop (I tried vaseline, Carlson E suppositories & calmol 4 suppositories)
4) Get out of your house & exercise. Not only is this important for circulation, but also for your mental health. I strongly believe that getting out of my mental funk helped a great deal in healing. Maybe you can only walk for 10 min at a time? That’s still better than nothing
5) Find ways to occupy your mind and do things that make you happy (this is related to the post above)
6) Once you find the ideal diet, keep doing it! Don’t take a bite out of that pizza, or that potato... it's not worth it. You have to be consistent every second!
I have a lot more to say but this post is really getting out of hand haha so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask. I haven't been on the site very often the last few months but I will make sure to check back periodically. I know it seems like this fissure thing is never ending, but you can heal, I promise it is possible! I'm sending lots of love and good vibes to everyone on this site!

It's great to read you finally made it and many thanks for posting your story and your breakthrough tips - hopefully, these will inspire many people who come to this site!......
It is so important to stay mentally positive!! I also can't stress that enough - Printing affirmations and pinning them up/ the mental triggers for encouragement help so much! I did the same along with a LOT of positive self-talk........I also agree that staying regular and pooping twice daily (in my experience too) is essential for keeping your body and bowels working properly, so they are able to poop out all the stuff you put into your body in a soft and controlled manner.......Vaseline is still my best friend today!!.........
All the very best to you in the future and may your fissure days now stay well in the past!! Take Care :)
