Anal Fissures in the New York Times

Postby Scientist2516 » 19 Nov 2013, 09:33

Hi everybody,
A few weeks ago I wrote to Jane Brody of the New York Times to suggest she write a column about anal fissures. Jane Brody's column is about health, and she often puts a very personal spin on her topics, making her articles engaging and easy to read. So few people know about fissures until they get one, and then they feel very alone. I thought Jane Brody would be the ideal person to educate people!

So, finally, the article is published. Here it is:
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/11/1 ... cuss/?_r=0

The only thing I'm disappointed about is that I thought she would mention this forum. I told her how important the forum has been to me and others, for help, information and most importantly moral support. I really hoped that by reading this article, more people would find us.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Thanks for mentioning this, Scientist! That's so awesome! And thanks, Igrik for posting a comment recognizing this website. It would be nice if everyone who was suffering from this knew about this website. It has been a life saver for me!

Way to put us out there Scientist2516;

Who know's where this may lead to now. Stay close
to your phone 'cause any day now Matt Lauer may be calling
you for an AF spot on the Today Show!
:D

Hey, lets dream a little.

Yes, I think that by reading that column, more people ill say
hey, its being talked about and they'll venture online and
google fissures and find us that way.

Great article and a tip o' the hat to you, Scientist!
Anytime we get to "share" our affliction it sure helps in the ole' isolation dept....

Ha ha, but, um, er...

"If a fissure doesn’t heal on its own, it can usually be treated and recurrences prevented with conservative measures."

DON'T WE WISH!!

And, um...er... here's what I DID like a LOT: 8)

"It is unwise to assume rectal bleeding, however slight, is innocuous."
GREAT advice!

that led up to the next statement," The doctor can examine the anus and the anal canal in the office with the unaided eye or by using a small instrument called an anoscope."

But my GP *saw* my fissure and ignored it (at first), better hope you have a GP who knows how to act...without prescribing hydrocortisone and other useless treatments....

But thanks for getting this out there, 2516, great article, well-written AND NYT!!!
