Psyllium Husks? Hmmm ...

Postby ukguy » 11 Oct 2013, 03:24

Psyllium husks have been getting rave reviews on here so I thought I would give them a try as the general advice everywhere seems pretty positive too.

However, I find they bulk everything up (as you would expect), make the stools bigger (as you would expect) and therefore create more pressure on the way out (as you would expect?) making my problems worse rather than better. I've had a bit of a relapse of late and can only put it down to Psyllium unfortunately.

Anyone else found the same? Am I missing something here?

Thanks for reading.

Same here never found it to be any use. Made the BM to big making me re-tear again. Doctor told me just to do fibre through diet which is better.

I just recently gave up psyllium, and my stools have been softer, even part liquid. I have a high fibre diet anyway, and decided I don't need the extra psyllium.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Whoa!!!

Is what I said when I looked a little closer into Psyllium husk. Like others I at first said hey this may be some good stuff and I almost put a link up in the website section here. I easily saw it was not for everyone (right, what is) but with the simple alternative of flaxseed, I said psyllium is not even worth my time. It definitely can benefit others, though you just have to be careful.

I kept seeing places where they were saying that the psyllium really bulks you up too much, so much so that others have reported that they re-tore their fissure from it. they say you really really have to take in enormous humungus amounts of water if your taking the psyllium.

The alternative, Flaxseed was much less bulkier and better on the system. Here in the past psyllium has been dicussed much it seems that 2-3 out of 10 have issues with it versus far less with flaxseed. Click on this link and you can follow the 270 threads on psyllium. Just click on the numbers at the bottom of the page for more of the threads ( the higher the number the older the thread.).........

Good, glad I'm not alone. I'm taking Magnesium and Movicol. Managed to get Movicol down to half a sachet at night plus 200-300Mg of Magnesium Citrate daily, but I can't seem to quit the Movicol altogether as I tend to relapse. Prolonged use of Movicol worries me and I had hoped Psyllium and Magnesium, which feel more natural, would have done the trick but apparently not.

Thanks anyway everyone.

You could try using less psyllium?
Or, as buttastic says, flax seed.
Try a bowl of porridge every morning. I swear by it! It's a great source of soluble fibre
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
