Sigmoidoscopy tomorrow and terrified

Postby Iona » 20 Nov 2011, 13:34

Hello all,
I have been rather quiet of late due to the soothing effects of movicol on my sistem. I have tried to come off it gently but have re-torn straight away so figure 2 sachets a day is not a bad price to pay for no pain (despite the taste from hell!).
Anyhoo, i have a Sigmoidoscopy tomorrow morning, and I am really scared about it. No anesthetic listed in the pre pack and due to last 10-15 mins with a nice enema thrown in before.
I am going on my own and leaving on my own and feel really really scared.
Anyone had this done? I am going through with it come hell or highwater but really wish someone was gonna be there to hold my hand!
Wish me luck!

Iona,
I've had 2 flex sigs--neither one with any sedation. The first one done at my place of employment by a company doctor  . I was shakey afterwards. The second one done a few years later by my GI doc at the time. It was not as bad, but they did insert "air" into the rectum which was not pleasant. Since you will be fully awake, I think you can tell them to stop if necessary like I did.
I see that you do not like the taste of Miralax. I used to mix it into a glass of 1/2 water and 1/2 grape juice (with fiber added). You might want to give that a try and see if it is more palatable to your tastes. Good luck!

Already said so on my thread - but good luck today. Mine on thursday and I'm sure (as a guy) I'll make a lot more fuss than you do.

Survived tha Sig!
Confirmed the fissure and scar tissue - hence the time its taking to heal. I should learn to trust the old instincts I seem to be spot on with stuff like this!
Well I have to report that it was not too bad an ordeal. The enema was not very nice, but the actual exam was ok.
The only bit i didnt like was the air they blow inside you to have a good look about as it was rather sore for a while whilst it made its exit!
I am very glad I went so I know nothing untoward is going on. I wouldnt be scared to do it again.
Prognosis, will take time to heal up so sticking to the movicol for a few months and a good diet and see where we go from there.
Thanks for your support all, is much appriciated.

So glad it went well. I'm still on for mine this thursday and this makes it seem a lot more bearable.
Out of interest, did they tell you what was going on as they did it. I've got a horrible feeling NHS Lewisham will do it then I'll have to wait for results/another appointment.
I'm a bit of a 'worst case scenario' guy so don't really like the idea of not knowing what's up at once.

Glad it went well Iona. Bluefizz, I had a sigmoidoscopy back in August and it was fine. The guy spoke to me afterwards about what he had seen (although this was a private consultation). In my NHS appointment they did an anoscopy and spoke to me straight away afterwards, I wouldn't have thought you'd have to wait for results :)

Thanks for the heads up - just unclear from appointment details whether its a doctor or nursing specialist doing it - as i've been referred by a surgeon in colorectal dept to gastroenterology dept

Hey bluefizz,
I could see on screen what was going on, was very clear and the doc was talking to me all through but to be honest i was mostly trying to stay still and calm! He gave me a diognose right after and advice sheets. I think you would be able to see anything odd on there as everything is very uniform and pink otherwise!
All my best to you, Iona
