Surgery next week

Postby lifeispain » 03 Jan 2013, 18:06

I've had an anal fissure for about 2 years, and just found out about it a few weeks ago. My previous doctors checked it out and said it was just a hemorrhoid (which I also have, right next to it), and gave me some creams that didn't help and had me change my diet to jello, chicken broth, and applesauce for a few weeks. It seemed to go away after the first couple weeks on that diet, but as soon as I started phasing in regular foods, it came right back. I went to see a butt specialist and he says it's a fissure and that it needs surgery to be fixed.
He didn't really tell me anything about what he would be doing for it, but his website says they do LIS, so I presume it's that. I had a lot of questions I wanted to ask him, but I get really nervous in those kinds of situations and I couldn't think clearly or get the words out.
I'm terrified. I already have more pain than I know how to deal with. He's going to be fixing a tear by tearing the thing the tear is in? From what I've been reading, it sounds like this is unlikely to help and more likely to ruin my life even further, leaving me with not only even more pain, but the inability to control my poos.
Has anyone had this done and actually gotten better? I feel like my life is basically over now, and it's all just ass pain for the rest of my days. Nothing to look forward to. Be straight with me, how bad is this going to be?
Like most of the time, when I poop, it comes out to a certain point, but then to make it drop off, I have to pinch my sphincter shut a bit to kind of break the sausage off and let it fall. How am I going to do that when my sphincter has been cut loose? Am I going to have to stand up and kind of manually break off each turd from now on? This is terrible!
I really don't know what to do.

lifeispain, first things first, welcome to the forum, I see you are doing the big step and having surgery, I have not tried surgery yet, but for what I have read is many success stories that will tell you that it works for them and they are doing way better and do not change anything.
Now, you are having a littler bit of pre op jitters and that is understandable, relax, calm down and do not let your mind run your life until surgery.
Don't worry about what comes next either, you will deal with it in a everyday basis after that.
For what I have read on members that have LIS this procedure will relax the muscle enough for you to have a full BM regardless of the way you used to have them, but still will required stool softeners that your doctor will recommend after surgery along with diet.
I had already 4 surgeries in my life (no related to the fissures) in the last 10 years and all of them had worry me to death but I am still here and still doing well, now, now, the fissure is a butt kicker, worry is a natural thing but do not let it run your life.
Only once I had to ask my doctor for something to relax me before the surgery and work great, perhaps if you find yourself too worry to sleep or have a normal day without worry the doctor can help you too.
I hope everything goes well for you and your recovery be a nice and easy one, just keep posting as that help many with their fears and worry.

Hi there just wanted to try & put your mind at rest about surgery I had LIS done on 9th Nov & it was no where as bad as I had feared. i'd been in awful pain every day before the op & the post op pain wasn't as bad as the pain I had after every bm before, I took my recovery very slowly I had 3 weeks off work just resting & being very careful with my diet. I healed well from the actual LIS procedure but unfortunately my fissure hasn't healed yet this was confirmed by my crs who examined me today at my first post op visit to see him, I knew things weren't yet right cos I still get pain after bm & have also had some bleeding. Despite this I don't regret at all having it done I have absolutely no problems with my continence post op even though they warn you about incontinence I think it's quite a rare side effect so don't let that worry you too much.
Hope all goes well

I had my LIS done 1 month ago and I don't regret it for a second. I was terrified too, but it wasn't that bad. The first 24 hours pretty much sucked, but the pain I had been dealing with before was still worse. I had some minor gas incontinence for the first few days and some mild leakage after a BM, but I had that with the fissure. I was only off work for 3 days. I'm now completely healed and haven't had fissure pain since before the surgery. I feel like I got my life back. Good luck with everything!

Had the procedure done 2 days ago now. It's been hurting pretty bad so far. I'm in the process of attempting to have my first bm since, and it's not going well at all. I'm afraid to push it because I don't want to tear out the stitches, but it's at the gate and not fitting through. This whole thing is a nightmare.
I've been taking sitz baths and it's not really helping. Everything is a deep blue bruised up mess down there.
I don't even see how this is real life anymore. Between this and a bunch of personal life bs, there's just nothing left. I'm alone on a toilet listening to my neighbors laugh through the bathroom wall, trying to squeeze out a deuce through a broken sphincter and failing miserably. What's the sense to this?
There's no going back. There's no being happy again. I'm putting up with this because I don't want like 2 people to feel bad if I were to die. That's a horrible thing to say, but it's true. My life is about trying to take shits now. And not being able to. That's all there is. That's all that's left. Caring for my doodled up asshole and failing. Bitching about it on the internet. There's nowhere to go from here. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore.

Oww lifeispain, wellover an hour has passed since your post. It is a desparate and lonely place to be in. You have been so brave to undertake the procedure and the next few days are going to be very hard for you. I know you are very bruised and sore but it has to come out. I hope you have taken some painkillers and using lots of vaseline to get that mother moving. If you cant..get to a hospital and ask for help. You have taken the big step to get this problem solved, hang in there. XXX Pia

I remember how bad that first BM was after my LIS. I was completely terrified, but it had to come out. It hurt a lot, but every BM after hurt less than the previous one. The thing was that the first BM still hurt less than my fissure pain BM's. The pain was only temporary. Hope things get better soon!

lifeispain, for what many have posted after having their surgery, the first BM is what they consider their worst but once is done things are not as bad as expected, hang in there and please tells us how things are going.
You are no alone, is plenty of members here that has been where you are at right now and doing well.

Whew! Just did it. It was blocked to where I couldn't even get gas out, and it was really hurting, but I put some mineral oil in the sitz bath and that seemed to help get things moving. The first stubborn bit that was blocking the way was a hassle and it hurt while not coming out, but once it got moving, it really was a lot easier than I expected. Indeed, nowhere near as bad as the regular pain from going with the untreated fissure.
Thanks for the kind words. It's weird that it helps, but it does. This must have been even harder in the pre-Internet days.
