I'd take the MiraLAX for as long as you need to. How to tell when that is, I don't know, as I'm still taking it daily myself Image I've tried taking it with and without food and it doesn't seem to make any difference for me. As Cheryl said be sure to drink a ton of water, though, because it needs water to soften stool and can also dehydrate you if your fluid intake isn't sufficient. MiraLAX might take a few days to take effect too.
I think a lot of folks here take Metamucil and/or Benefiber with MiraLAX so you should be okay there. I picked up some Benefiber but never used it, as I changed my diet to be super high in fiber (lots of veggie soup, some fresh fruit, fish/chicken instead of beef, granola bars and Wheat Thins Fiber Selects for snacks) and that combined with the MiraLAX was more than enough. I think there's a lot of variance here, some folks find that too much fiber and MiraLAX results in diarrhea, for others it's a necessity to get soft stools.
I tried sitz baths in the beginning with a $12 sitz bath outfit from the local drug store and it seemed okay for short term symptomatic relief in my case. It didn't seem to give any long term relief, though, so I personally stopped using it pretty early on.
Cheers and good luck, hopefully your fissure is just acute and doesn't end up going chronic.

You can try using the bathtub for sitting in if you don't want to use a Sitz bath.

Is the specialist a general surgeon or a CRS perhaps? In any case you should ask them to prescribe you some nitroglycerine. My pain after bm was more minor to none two months in and if I had nitro back then I would've probably be healed by now.At your stage you would only have to apply it once a day 20 min before bm just to relax the sphincter enough so your stool won't rub on it as much causing it to retear.Hopefully the specialist will provide you with the tools you need.Welcome to the club and good luck.

regarding calmoseptine, my newest CRS suggested i use it as a moisture barrier. it seems to burn a little when i put it on, although i've heard others say it feels cooling. if you have any leaking or mucus coming from the fissure it might be a good idea.

the calmoseptine is just basically menthol. It Feels cooling. Also, I'll ask my doc for the nitroglycerin. I really like what the miralax has done with my BM's. No pain, and I haven't bled in the last 3 days... but all it takes is one bad day to ruin it all :(

Thats a great start for you Nebelwerfer stool softeners is a god send for AF.Just do a sitz bath after your bm you should feel close to normal for the rest of the day.Try to fit in a couple more sitz bath through the course of the day if you have the time and if at anytime you feel any tightening and it should hold you off til your next appointment.Well its only a day away for you but thats my daily regimen. At your stage of AF so long as you keep your poop soft you should be able to get the bleeding under control and start the healing process. But don't get down on yourself if you get some blood again, for chronic fissure sufferers it's pretty much a roller coaster filled with a lot of up and downs.Atleast you caught on to it pretty early unlike me so your going to be ok.You got good info and know what tools to get and the last thing you gotta have is a positive, hopeful attitude.

well, i guess the broader question i should ask is,
which foods make my stool hard and compacted and should be avoided?
and which foods are good at keeping my stool small, moist and soft?
