The time has finally come for my first post

Postby Nebelwerfer_ » 08 Oct 2009, 23:13

28 year old (formerly in perfect health) male law enforcement officer here. I been lurking these forums and seeing you're remedies and whatnot.
Anywho, I never used to see doctors at all until last august when I became very constipated and as a result developed an AF :(
I have had one before when I was in college and it healed itself in a few weeks, but this one has lingered for 2 months. The pain after a BM is moderate and lasts only for a couple minutes, then I'm fine for the rest of the day, with severe occasional itching.
When I saw blood on my toilet paper this morning I knew it was time to go see a doctor. My general practitioner saw me today, put his finger up there and gave me a referral to see the specialist. I got an appointment for next tuesday.
I have been reading here that hydrocortizone cream is bad in the long run, eating high fiber helps. My question is: what can i do to help the the passing of a BM to reduce the agitation?

Drink lots of water and take a stool softener (Miralax, etc.), and get plenty of fiber--you might need supplements.

If your BMs are hard then I'd try MiraLAX for sure. It takes a day or two to soften things up but works wonders!

BTW I'd definitely be very proactive at this phase. When my fissure first started the pain was only moderate with some mild discomfort too. But I didn't do much about it except use some hydrocortisone suppositories which weren't effective at all, and the pain eventually became severe and absolutely crippling. Didn't help that my primary doctor didn't know squat about fissures and just told me it would go away on its own with minimal intervention on my part. When you say your fissure started last August, do you mean August 2009 or August 2008? If it was August 2009, then maybe you still have a chance at nipping it in the bud before it goes too crazy. Definitely don't take it too casually and just take a "wait and see" approach like I mistakenly did in the beginning...

if you're only had the fissure 2 months you're SO lucky. keep your BMs soft with something like miralax or MOM now and you'll probably be fine. it's not chronic yet. it also doesn't sound like you have much, if any pain, so it doesn't seem too serious. i'm sure it'll go away quick.

I take metamucil, benefiber, and miralax. The instructions on the Miralax say to take it with 4-8 oz. of liquid. It is important to have liquid with Miralax! Good luck!

Sitz baths are great. They actually help the whole area to relax. I also use miralax every night before I go to bed and I take 3 tsp. of benefiber 3 times a day but everyone has to find what works best for them. The only thing I would suggest is to add the benefiber to your diet gradually. If you take too much at once it can cause you to get real gassy and uncomfortable. You need to give yourself time to adjust. Suzy
