What should I do??

Postby Cinderella » 24 Jun 2008, 11:30

I am scheduled to have LIS in September. I have now suffered from AFs one year and 7 months. However my butt has become better all the time. I still have spasms and occasionally pain but the pain is not bad. I mean I can manage with it almost all the time and most of the time I do not have pain at all. Very seldom I have had horrible pain but it is over a month ago when it happened last time.
As you know I have dreamed to get pregnant soon. What should I do now? Go through LIS to make sure that I can manage pregnancy or try to conceive and have LIS while pregnancy if possible? Should I have LIS to avoid horrible pain during pregnancy or have LIS if the pain comes back when I am pregnant? Without pregnancy plans I would not have LIS for sure or at least I would still waite. However I want to proceed and get more children so I have to make a decision. What would you do in my situation?

I would probably get the LIS first but I know when you decide you want a baby it is hard to wait. I would not get pregnant and then get LIS. I think that could be risky and I may be wrong but I don't know that any doctor is going to perform rectal surgery on you while you are pregnant.

You seem to have your heart set on getting pregnant, so if you feel like you can handle it, then go for it. And then after pregnancy if you are having problems you can get the LIS.

Good luck with whatever you decide! :belle:

If it was me I'd wait and get the LIS, although that is a long time to wait! You'd have less worries and possible complications if you do, I would think...

If it was me, I would prefer to get the LIS out of the way before trying to get pregnant, I definately wouldn't have that kind of surgery whilst pregnant! Pregnancy can cause havoc with our bottoms even if they are healthy bottoms, so I would get the LIS done to make sure any future fissures/hemmies would cause less trouble.
Good luck!

I would not even dream of getting pregnant with unresolved butt issue but we are all different, I guess. Only you can make that decision for yourself. I think that Lecia is right - that doctors would not even conceder performing LIS while you are pregnant. If you think that you can handle fissure pain for 9 months and go through LIS surgery and recovery during post partum, than you definitely can go ahead and conceive. If in any doubt - have LIS first. It is so easy to forget the intensity of pain of fresh opened fissure once we feel better - it is our self defense mechanism. Same with labor pains - once it is over one forgets LOL - or otherwise nobody would have more than one baby LOL

Hi C. Fiss makes a valid point that it is easy to forget (or block out) the intense pain that an AF brings on. That can only be excerbated by a pregnancy and the complications that will persist in treating it at the same time. That coupled with pain could make life quite miserable. I would recommend seeking the advice of your Drs and a CRS who may have dealt with this issue with other patients. What ever you decide make sure you are committed to your decision as you mental health will be most important in dealing with either choice. Good luck with whatever you decide. Im sure you know you will be supported and comforted by all here.

Thank you very much for your support.
I think I will get LIS done and after that trying to get pregnant. This morning I had pain again and I was bleeding. The pain was not bad at all but I clearly felt that my AF had re-opened. However I had pain only during BM. I think there is too big risk to get pregnant while I have this problem.
My biggest worry is still the risk of incontinence. I have red so many research and there are always stated that there is a risk from 10% to 30% to get problems to hold gas etc. Because I have not have bad pain for a while I think I have even bigger risk because I think that my sphincter muscle is not so tight as it used to be when I had worse pain.
By the way is there anyone else who cannot have BM outside home? I have to get up very early every morning to make sure that I have BM before going to work. If I try to have BM outside home I am always having horrible spasm which is causing pain and I cannot get anything out. This is really bothering my life because I cannot leave home before having BM.
One question more what have you told at work when you have been on sick leave? At my work everyone is very curious and I do not want to tell about this to anyone. However I feel bad to make up something. I also have to give sick leave certificate to my boss .So do I have to go to see another doctor and complain about headache or something else because I do not want to give a sick leave certificate where is written LIS? I might sound very strange but I have not shared this problem with anyone outside my family and I definitely do not want to do it.

Could your doc put surgery down for the sick leave and not specify what type?

Cinderella -
I think you are doing the right thing with LIS. we have been suffering for the same amount of time and I would get LIS in a heartbeat, but I have been pain free since March. I can't believe that the nitro is actually working. One more slip up and I am cutting my butt! Image
I also can not have a BM outside of the house. I need so much concentration to have one and I don't even have any pain or bleeding. As a matter of fact I need to be alone in the bathroom - usually my 1 year old and dogs want to be in there with me - I can't even have any of them in there. Everyone knows that is my alone time.
Can your doctor just put down you need so many days off. Medical privacy is a very serious issue and there should be no reason for your boss to know your exact diagnosis - just that you need a week of medical leave.
Please let us know how it goes. Your AF's days are numbered and you will be healed soon!

Gals,
I can completely understand how you feel. Using the toilet is so much easier when in your own home. I even put quite a bit of thought into which bathroom I use in my home if I am not alone in my house (I know I am weird in that respect). I have a question about sphincter spasms, but I will start a new thread.
