I think this one will vary widely from person to person. For me personally, beef is a definite no-no, but chicken and fish seem okay. I do okay with basically all kinds of veggies, and even chocolate bars. Fruits are hit or miss, some I'm fine with but others irritate my stomach and give me diarrhea, which also aggravates the fissure (maybe more the acid content than physical trauma). I don't drink milk so I can't comment there... I think red meat is one of the things that most fissure sufferers would suggest reducing or cutting out for the time being though.

I think Kim has a sticky thread that has lots of info and input from many people re: foods to eat (or not) with an AF.

Just got back from from the specialist. She says I have 2 AF's: a small acute one, and a larger chronic one with the muscle exposed. She was surprised when I told her that the pain lasts only for a few minutes after a BM and it was moderate pain at that. I told her that as long as my BM's are small and soft it doesn't bleed, so she said I would heal up in 8 weeks and she prescribed me a nitroglycerin substitute that wont give me headaches. Just need to keep my BM's moist... I vow never to eat red meat again, and will eat cheese very sparingly. Also, the big AF has a skin tag associated with it now.

Wow dude - if you've got a big one with the muscle exposed and only feel temporary pain then you're THE MAN! I think I'd be on my knees by that point. Was it nifedipine or diltiazem that she gave you? Good luck and keep us posted!

No real reason, just curious. Both are basically blood pressure medications that relax the sphincter muscle. I think the mechanisms by which they work are different and the systemic places they act are different but for us fissure sufferers the difference isn't terribly pertinent as far as I know. I use nifedipine too.

It honestly doesn't hurt that bad for too long, especially now that my fiber intake is comparable to an elephant because my bm's are nice and soft. I even go 3 times a day now, but it's ok as long as they're small. I just dont know how long i can keep this up because one day I know I'm going to have a hard BM and it might ruin all my healing

Keep drinking water, eating right, and thinking positively, and maybe you won't. If you have a slight setback, you'll recover. I think it is a very gradual process!!

And keep the faith in Miralax. I haven't found much that it can't soften up yet :)
