Hello Fellow Bottom Sufferers

Postby Em » 25 Sep 2011, 19:21

I think I had my fissure for a year without realising what it was - just a bit of blood now and then.
About 5 months ago I found a lump on my anus - I went to docs and he said it was probably a cyst and gave me AB's. It took 2 lots but went down.
I knew there was something else there though and went to see the specialist (I'm in Australia). He said I had a fistula and would need surgery which I had a few days later along with a colonoscopy - 3 months ago. This seemed to go well and I thought that was the end of it - I'd never heard of a fissure...
Anyway, I was on long service leave visiting my family in the UK and 5 weeks ago I freaked out as I had a lot of blood when i went to the toilet (much more than I've ever had). Anyway, after googling I found this site and it was a relief to read about other people having similar issues.
I don't get pain when I go to the toilet, it feels numb and uncomfy and itchy at times.
I use a soap-less cleanser and wipe myself gently when I've been to the toilet and after a shower etc.
I've been sticking manuka honey inside my anus (not many places I'd say that in public :D ).
I'm having probiotics.
I eat loads of veg and fibre. I've never been constipated in my life - I'm the opposite - whenever I get stressed (I'm a teacher) it goes to my bowels and gut.
Anyway, I have an appointment with the surgeon in 3 weeks time for him to take a look. In the meantime I went to my docs and he gave me a prescription for soov-it for haemorroids (hydrocortisone). The chemist suggested rectogesic.
I've since read on here that a lot of people don't like hydrocortisone as it's thinning...
I'm going to try to get a tonic to strengthen veins - horse chestnet is supposed to be good.
I'm confused about my psyllium husk - I have that to make my stools a bit bulkier- otherwise it's too watery and I go way too often. I was reading on here that p husk is too bulky and that benefiber is better - however, this has wheat in it and I have a wheat intolerance.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?
Thank you for reading.

Hey Em,
It varies what works for one may not work for the other. Many folks take Metamucil and have no problems. If your stools tend to be loose then it's probably going to work much better for you then it would for some of us who don't have that problem. Metamucil always made my stool too bulky but that's definitely not the case for everyone. That's what makes it so hard to give advice on here with diet, supplements and stool softeners. There's no one size fits all, Lol. We all had to kind of go by trial and error. Don't change anything that works for you! :)

ps... the rectogesic would be much better for the fissure. It will help relax the muscle and promote blood flow. Hydrocortisone may be ok but I wouldn't use it for over a couple of weeks. Both my CRS and GI told me it's useless, can thin the skin and cause it to ulcerate. I've heard quite a few other folks on here say the same thing. It felt pretty good in the beginning but as time passed, I felt it made things worse... Here in the states- it says on the back of prep-h not to use over two weeks Image

Well, I went back to having a sitz bath in my bath tub this evening (like I did religiously after my fistula surgery).
I'm not going to use the cortisone cream.
I'm going to endeavour to insert a mixture of olive oil and manuka honey... I find it hard to go in very far but I'll give it a go.
I'm also going to get some homeopathic arnica montana 30c and look into either horse chestnut or buckwheat tincture for vein strengthening.
I'll report back.

Hi EM, Am so sorry your suffering!! But welcome to the club it's nice having you under the circumstances Image I agree with Dawn and would like to add that it's been my experience that swapping diets, creams, pills & potions works against us?? Just my opinion x
It is all trial & error though. Can I suggest something?? I wud try to resist the temptation to stick anything up your o ?? Ouch Ouch ouch... I am the Vaseline advocate lol....Use it liberally around ur o to ease out bms and if loose (loose stools can cause fissures too) then it will become a barrier cream? Aww Good Luck and hey MISS, don't give me a D minus for my English writing ;-0 Image

I will give you an A+ for sensible advice. :D
That's exactly what my sister said - she knows me very well. I tend to get carried away by stuff - that's anything in my life. When she saw me googling Dr Wheatgrass and then a suppository she said I could make it worst.
I've just had a BM and after using the olive oil last night when I wiped my bottom it was soothing not rough.
I will try vaseline.
The best thing I use for cracked lips is lanolin (breast feeding mums use it for cracked nipples). This heals my sore lips within a day.
Has anyone used that before?
I was thinking about how I could have got it - I remembered that I went to the doctors about 3 years ago with an itchy bottom - I wasn't sure if I had worms as I work with 6 year olds... He gave me cortisone cream and it got better. maybe that was the start of the fissure.
I also used to lean right forwards on the toilet and push to get the last bit out. That also could be a cause.
Now I have a little footstool that I use so my knees are bent up.

Whatever we do we must not strain! The footstool is a great idea! Don't the Chinese or Japanese do that without the stool from childhood?? Dunno?? My 42yr old brain is digging deep there ha ha!!
About ur itchy bottom and doc, don't u think he should of given u a worming tablet?? Not that your a dog lol At the same time he should give you head lice foam treatment lol....Kids ha ha!! You poor teachers!!! Let us know how u go with Vaseline! For me, Vaseline, Movicol and Magnesium supplements are the way to go. Hope today is better for you!

I'm 42 too.
:D
When my dog has his next flea treatment and worming, I'll try it next time.
This might be the fissure cure we're all looking for. Not bad if I solve everyone's problems after being on the site for 1 day.
